SINGH, CHARANJIT: Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat 2LP (BC 302LP)
gatefold 2LP version. Until recently, it wasn't much more than some rumors on the web: an LP called Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat, featuring acid house avant la lettre, that was recorded in India in 1982 in India, 5 years before the first acid house record, Acid Tracks by Phuture. So it turns out, the record was no rumor. Only a few hundred copies of the LP were ever pressed, and only a handful seem to have survived. Moreover, the LP outdoes all expectations. Performed on the type of synths that would later define acid house, the Roland TB-303 and TR-808, the album sounds light years ahead of its time with its repetitive beats and hypnotic electronic melodies. Its maker, Bollywood session musician Charanjit Singh, set out to translate ancient Indian classical ragas to the modern synthesizer, and in doing so, invented house music along the way. The 10 tracks make a consistent listen from A to Z. Its restrained minimalism and lack of cheesiness makes it incredibly contemporary, sounding animated, fluid and unabashedly alive.

KING TUBBY: Hometown Hi-Fi Dubplate Specials 1975-1979 LP (JRLP 051LP)
LP version. King Tubby's Hometown Hi-Fi was one the great sound systems in Jamaica. It also proved a fantastic outlet for the Dub Plate Specials cut at Tubby's studio, providing exclusive cuts to be played out, enticing the dance's audience. The tracks at the time were mainly cut over producer Bunny "Striker" Lee rhythms, that Bunny stored at Tubby's studio which was in fact his home, 18 Drumilly Avenue in Kingston, Jamaica. The versions were given exclusive plays at Tubby's before some finding their way on to vinyl, as the B-side version cut to its A-side vocal, proving so popular, that the records were often bought for its version side over its vocal counterpart. King Tubby and Producer Bunny "Striker" Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music. Tubby's vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny's vast catalog of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard... the remix/version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Tubby and Striker were at Treasure Isle Studios one day while Ruddy from Spanish Town was working with the engineer Byron Smith. "Tubby and myself was talking when Ruddy was cutting some dub but Smithy (engineer) made a mistake and forgot to put in the voice. It was a two-track recording in those days. Ruddy said 'No Man! Make it stay!' And so they cut the rhythm. When I went over to Ruddy's that Saturday night a dance was in progress and when they played the vocal to the tune... then he said we're going to play 'Part Two.' They never called it 'Version.' And then he played the rhythm track. The song was a catchy song and everybody started to sing along and the deejay started to toast so everything went down well. On Monday morning I went up and I said 'Tubbs the mistake we made was a serious joke. It mash up Spanish Town!' The people went wild. So you have to start to do that now 'cause when the man put on the 'Part Two' everyone started singing this song. It played about 20 times. I said you try Tubbs!' Well the next Saturday night now when Tubby strung up down the farm U Roy said he's going to play 'Part Two' but Tubby did it different now. He started with the voice then dropped it out and let the rhythm run and then he brought in the voice in the middle and from there Tubby started to get really popular.'' --Bunny "Striker" Lee. Dynamic Sounds upgraded to 16-track recording in 1972 and Tubby purchased, again with the help of a deal brokered by Bunny Lee, the old 4-track equipment and the MCI console from their Studio B. The four tracks now gave him far wider scope to work with and he began to create a new musical form where the bass and drum parts were brought up while the faders allowed Tubby to ease the vocal and rhythm in and out of the mix. Jamaican Recordings has compiled a selection of cuts that were all tried and tested on Tubby's hometown hi-fi sound system and worked a great set of Bunny Lee's rhythms in fine style. SEAWORTHY + TAYLOR DEUPREE: Wood, Winter, Hollow CD (12K 1075CD)
"Working together in person has been an important point in Deupree's collaborations lately - much preferring the human interaction and local landscapes over the soulless exchange of sound files over the Internet. With this point taken care of, the pair of Seaworthy and Deupree struck out in a New York February to a 4,000 acre nature preserve near Deupree's studio called Ward Pound Ridge, a park rich in history that supports a diverse range of plant and animal life. While the cold of winter kept most of the animals quiet the landscape nonetheless teemed with sounds. The local environment was hit badly by Hurricane Sandy a few months prior and the remnants of broken trees and debris littered much of the woodland area. Deupree and Webb spent three days on the trails recording sounds and images which created direction and purpose for their album which was composed in the evenings in the 12k studio. The resulting Wood, Winter, Hollow traces a rustic path of the days in the woods with an equally natural sound set fronted by Webb on a nylon string guitar. Bells, sticks, melodica, and the occasional analog synthesizer form the sonic backdrop echoing the quiet, but lively sounds of the winter forest. Endemic field recordings, including hydrophones placed in near-frozen streams, became an integral part of the work creating a subtle narrative that places the album in its specific place in time."

Two tracks on Rinse from Kode9 -- "Uh" (which features on Rinse: 22) and "Ok" (exclusive) -- make a thrilling point of contact between grime, broken UK house and the disorienting lurch of trap. "Uh" bounds along at house tempo, repeatedly switching dramatically between the half-time lope of hip-hop, the shuffle of two-step and house's 4/4 pulse. "Ok" finds him exploring stranger, more rhythmically divergent territories: its strings of triplet-led hi-hat clicks and time-stretched snares swirling wildly around each other, accompanied by a grimey synth melody.

The I Like the Feeling You're Giving Me EP for Rinse encapsulates many aspects of Hrdvision's sound, drawing strongly both from Detroit techno's woozy, melody-soaked romanticism and the precision and intricacy of minimalist European house and techno. The title-track coasts along on a clipped, synthetic house rhythm and a thick, fuzzy bass line while melodic drones stretch out across its surface. "Barcelona" and "Apocalypse6" are both more languid and more dramatic while "Feel You're Fading" is a peak-time track with a mirror-like synth.

The disembodied voice on Proxima's "Thermal Vision," the lead track on this 12" for Tempa is a perfect summary of its disorienting appeal. "Valve Wars" is harsher, all battery-acid bass textures paired with woody percussive clicks and metallic snare taps. With soundscapes taking serious shapes, the emotion actually comes from deep within: pointing out to infinity. ‘Desolate’ is a hazardous mixture of sick, twisted growls taking extremely unique forms, sub-driven resonating basslines and spacious soundscapes, which bound you to darkness instantly. As the intriguing second part of ‘Desolate’ flows through the mind and soul, no listener is left unharmed as it sweeps you away from reality. With further developed harsh, sharp  percussive elements and frightening samples to accentuate this cold production, desolation will become a step closer each and every time you lose control.  [Fornax – Unconscious] The scene portrayed in the intro of ‘Unconscious’ is nicely reproduced and executed, accompanied by an unforgettable pad that helps build up a mind-blowing drop. As it hits the brain, the ‘havoc’ created by Fornax really levitates your journey to a different state of mind. The ever-evolving growls make it all seem endless, tuning into the right frequencies through contagious rhythms and tribalistic hits. Striking low-end makes you shake to the ground, with resonance tearing up everything in its way. ‘Breathing’ sounds being one of the hypnotizing factors that will keep you locked wherever you are; it’s a fundamental catalyst that slows your reaction time. This ultimately makes it such a powerful track, which might instigate cruel nightmares.  [FNC – Imprinted] Intensely liquefied growls lead you through the minds of these two producers reaching from the depths of the UK. The woman’s voice sounds effective and soothing; preparing you for a mental stepper that gets the mind straight. As a smooth and vibrant low-end accompanies the chilled minimal percussion, the ice-cold growls freeze your receptors while they leave their carved marks. With little suppressed drum hits, which might be seen as something functioning as a trace, it could give you a sense of direction towards the evil information stored inside your head. The punchy  mid-ranges give a bounce to this track that remind me of Kaiju’s style, with a unique little blend inside. Slovenia-born Valentino Kanzyani has been one of Cadenza's secret weapons over the last 12 months, already building a solid profile with the first two installments of his Love & Gratitude series. And now he delivers the third, and final, part of this musical trilogy, with a continuous mixed CD by Valentino himself, featuring almost all of the compositions released in the series. For the uninitiated, it's a perfect album mix that encapsulates Valentino's deep and seductive sounds. Highights include "Viole(n)t Thoughts," a sultry and smooth workout, its light percussion providing the melody, and a groove that is so intoxicating, its 14-minute tenure really hypnotizes. "Automatique" is a track that comes with cinematic string sweeps and deft keys that shape the deep house rhythm, its filtered hats forever propelling things forward. "Chord Release" continues to define Kanzyani's sound, a minimal and dark palette onto which sub-tropical effects and precision hits and claps are layered, but never over cooking the recipe, just on-point and effective dance rhythms. At a time when most young people from inner cities chose their musical paths -- soul-head, reggae, indie or rock -- and stuck with them 'til they knew better, boogie was the big thing in the UK's (mainly) black clubs. Now, Z Records is releasing a gatefold double vinyl pack of the influential Destination Boogie album that was first released back in 2006 but only as a double CD. As Sean P. says: "It's taken a long time for boogie to surface from the underground; its largely been ignored, or regarded as disco's poor cousin ... but it kick-started a musical ground-swell which would see club music topping the charts all over the world again. The post-disco era represented by boogie was a turbulent and creative time for independent dance music in general and one where the early trends in music technology are easy to spot." So how, you may ask, does boogie differ from its glitzier forbearer, disco? Well it's still a continuation of disco, though dressed up differently -- for example, as you'll hear on the CD, its rhythms weren't always the ubiquitous four-to-the-floor. Rather, boogie is all about the groove. It's a heady blend of disco, funk, soul/R&B, jazz and electronic, fused by and for the party-heads of the day. Among the gems unearthed on this 2CD comes the quirky synth-pop of Karen Young, Lowrell Simon's fat-bottomed love odyssey "Love Massage," Carol Sylvian's beefy gospel-funk "Think" and Color's life-affirming R&B stormer "Am I Gonna Be the One?" Turbo presents their debut album -- Ghost Systems Rave -- an immersive 14-track journey into the heart of techno's future. This record should put Clouds in the ranks of the elite UK techno vanguard. Comparisons to the work of Blawan, Zomby, and Actress are justifiable and inevitable. What is critical -- and hopefully obvious to the careful listener -- is that none of this is derivative. That these connections will be made simply speaks to the level of artistry on display, as opposed to any specific tricks, sounds or motifs.
