INVISIBLE HANDS, THE: The Invisible Hands 2LP (ABDT 050LP)
Limited edition 2LP. The Invisible Hands is the English translation of the band's original Egyptian Arabic name: El Ayadi El Khafeyya. Taking almost two years to create amidst an unusual and challenging backdrop, this is the new project of Alvarius B. (Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls). Eleven highly-crafted songs projected through his typically dark lens of songwriting and a band of brilliant musicians from Egypt; this special edition limited 2LP includes the English and Arabic language vocal versions of the album together in one set. Sides A and B are the English album delivered in AB's patented sinister style, drenched in lovely psychedelic folk arrangements and vocal choruses with a nod to what could have potentially been an album that surfaced decades ago but instead found its way into the future, superimposed over historic and tumultuous times in the center of the Arab world. Sides C and D are the Arabic version -- the exact same 11 songs but the lead vocals are sung in Arabic by Cherif El Masri and Aya Hemeda. The mixes are almost identical but there are various subtle differences in instrumentation, vocal choruses, and effects. The group was established during the summer of 2011 and the album was recorded in Cairo in May of 2012. Band members include Cherif El Masri and Aya Hemeda (both former members of popular Egyptian group Eskenderella) with drummer Magued Nagati. On a handful of songs, several other players from the Cairo scene are featured including Sam Shalabi (Shalabi Effect/Land Of Kush) on oud and Mohamed Medhat on violin and viola. This limited edition one-time 2LP vinyl pressing comes in a beautiful heavy-duty gatefold jacket with full-color artwork and all lyrics and credits printed in English and Arabic.

2011 release. A warm, filled with rich tones re-issue of one of the earliest tapes of Charlatan. After the Triangles LP on his own Digitalis label, this is Brad Rose's second vinyl release under his solo project moniker, Charlatan. Synthclouds and starchords on a carpet of white hiss. Brad Rose is one of the most active personas in the current adventurous contemporary music scene. As label honcho of Digitalis records/limited, he's constantly in search of exciting new groups/artists. Add to that numerous solo and collaborative projects and you can rightly consider him as one of the spearheads of the experimental underground scene for many years. This release marks one of the highlights from his output in 2011, now rightly re-issued on heavy vinyl with two bonus tracks.

Currently based in Brussels, Félicia is a French musician, artist and writer who is making an increasing impact in experimental music circles as of late. Her music pieces and drawings are often improvised and inspired by her travels and her night visions. Fans of Grouper, Motion Sickness Of Time Travel, and other forest-droners should definitely check her out. The sleeve, a watercolor painting made by Felicia, is a rough impression of the savage child and adds to the music's magic.

Re-issue of this long sold-out cassette on Gift Tapes. Mind Over Mirrors is Jaime Fennelly, harmonium player and electronica builder. Before he started his solo-project he was a member of junk-folk band Peeesseye and psychedelic free-jazz trio Acid Birds. He created Mind Over Mirrors when he was residing on an island in the Salish Sea in Washington from 2007 till 2010. Mind Over Mirrors' music is all about saturated sound. Fennelly plays his pump organ through a battery of oscillators and effects that extend and distort its tones to obtain in-the-red highs, chest-rattling mids, and low notes as bulbous and squeezable as a slightly underinflated inner tube. The end results are slow, constructive growing, repetitive melodies, and a warming wilderness of vivid harmonic depth.

Since 2000, Ã?lg has made a name for himself in the experimental underground performing solo in venues across Europe and the USA and also in the trio Reines D'Angleterre with Jo Tanz and Ghédalia Tazartès. Over the years he has built a complex body of work which has been spread amongst reputable labels such as Kraak, SS, Lal Lal Lal, Taped Sounds and Nashazphone. LP version on 180 gram vinyl. "Offene Türen is a purely electronic album. Without losing himself in their infinite tonal possibilities, Roedelius delights in playing a selection of synthesizers. He even deploys an analog rhythm machine now and then to discreet effect. Roedelius takes great care to steer well clear of any cosmic fog or de-personalized abstractions. Nothing of the sort can be heard, as he focuses intensely and exclusively on the relationships of rhythm, harmony, and melody. Roedelius conjures up their delicate timbres on synthesizer with the greatest of ease. The seasoned electronic musician would have found similar results beyond the reach of his good old Farfisa organ. Offene Türen is an album of electronic chamber music and only someone with as sunny a disposition as Roedelius could be its composer and performer. Born 1936 in Magdeburg, Manfred Schoof is one of the most popular jazz avant-gardists in Europe. He played in projects like Globe Unity Orchestra, Manfred Schoof Quintet, New Jazz Trio, and many more. Since 1990, he has taught music at the University Of Cologne and works for television and radio. He composed the music for "The Program With The Mouse." Laurent Jeanneau's, aka Kink Gong's, electronic project continues on Discrepant. Since the end of the '90s, Laurent Jeanneau, also an integral Sublime Frequencies contributor, has been recording the music of mostly endangered minorities of South East Asia. Alongside his relentless pursuit of remote, exotic, and unpublished musical traditions, he also started creating electronic versions by combining raw recordings with natural sounds, archive material and electronically-treated sounds. For Voices, Laurent based his alternate re-versions around the extensive voice recordings he made on location in the southern regions of Yunnan and Guizhou in China as well as in Sapa, North Vietnam, and Phongsaly, Northern Laos. The compositions contain unedited acoustic recordings, computer modified parts, sound collages and acoustic recordings of people and instruments. All tracks were recorded on location and re-arranged by Laurent Jeanneau in Dali, China. Special vinyl one-time pressing of 300 copies mastered and cut at Dubplates + Mastering by Rashad Becker.

The Death Of Rave is proud to present the first album-length beat-less composition by Patrick Stottrop aka Kareem. Since 1996 the now-legendary, Berlin-based artist has produced nearly 20 singles and albums for both his Zhark Recordings and Ramadan labels, Kanzelramt's K2 0 subprint, and Paris' Fondation Sonore, forging a strong identity split between uncompromising industrial techno and RZA-like instrumental hip-hop, all with a blackened streak of Gothic finesse. Following a hiatus during the late '00s, in 2012 Kareem was prompted by the death of a relative and the need to retreat, spiritually and mentally, into writing "Porto Ronco." Borrowing its title from a village by Lake Maggiore on the Swiss/Italian border where his grandfather bought a house in the '60s as refuge from potential war, and "in case the Soviets would march into Berlin," it manifests marked detachment and evolution from his previous work, abandoning all but traces of rhythm to concentrate and expand upon the downcast atmospheres and Brutalist structures which always lurked behind his beat-driven compositions. In doing so, it implies intrinsic psycho-geographic and hauntological resonance between the place and the piece, opening a space for stoic sehnsucht, elegiac reflection in classic tradition. The original piece is an unabridged 45-minute composition, but for this release Kareem made a 30-minute vinyl edit split over two sides of an LP. Primed for sequestered solo listens, it captures an elusive Berlin spirit which has been lost with successive tides of weekending dunces in the easyjet age; a metaphysical feeling or spectral presence that has long lain brooding in the city since Conrad Schnitzler's earliest invocations and since percolated everywhere from Christina Kubisch's radiant electromagnetic recordings to the gothic industrialism of Einstürzende Neubauten, thru the monotone ecstasy of Basic Channel and the etheric romance of Leyland Kirby in his Friedrichshain period. Ultimately, it's a deeply-personal piece of work bound to capture the imaginations of depleted ravers in the after after-hours. Vinyl cut by Rashad at Dubplates + Mastering.

"At first glance, the titles on Chuck Johnson's Crows in the Basilica suggest an artist both aware of and in touch with his surroundings. There are mountains, creeks, sand; towns, streets, basilica; crows, geese. Skim Johnson's liner notes and this sense of outward attention expands. Songs are based on raga improvisations and Chinese melodies, the Piedmont blues of Carolina pioneer Elizabeth Cotten and the mountain guitar of Appalachian legend Roscoe Holcomb. But despite how conscious Johnson is of what's going on outside -- both outside his window and outside our borders -- his journey on Crows in the Basilica is as much internal as external. Johnson's references to the elements around him and the art that inspires him are launching points toward the wider realms of nature and music, but they also propel him inward, toward introspection and self-reflection. In fact, for much of these eight masterful tunes, inside and outside are mirror images, each influencing and guiding the other in a recursive loop of creativity."

It’s been exciting to watch Outboxx take shape over the past two years, chasing their vision for a more meaningful kind of deep house music via Jake’s intense attention to detail, Matt’s way with the keys and Naomi’s arresting voice. It’s been a steady progression, reaching out to select labels but keeping things largely close to home on Idle Hands, Immerse and BRSTL, while their tracks have developed in ever more confident strides. They make perfect sense as a Bristol act, but not because of an externally idealised vision of a Bristol house music scene, but more because their music taps into the same spirit of adventure and soulfulness that has always characterised the most treasured of all music from the city. Like many before them, Outboxx have a gift for capturing emotion and anchoring it with just the right amount of rudeness. It f eels like the right time then for an album from the pair, and upon listening to it you can instantly hear why. Afforded the space of a long player, Jake and Matt’s ideas flourish, both more refined and wilder in the same instance. The tempos move from lo-fi downtempo skit to pumped up house, via haunted minimal techno and snappy garage, and yet the shifts seem barely noticeable between the cohesive sound that they have formed. Most importantly, it’s a record that sounds completely out on its own, marrying together disparate sounds and rhythms and making them sound natural. It’s a great testament to how far Outboxx have come in short space of time, and an equally exciting pointer to what might come in the future.

Stefan Schwander has been releasing his heavily processed and sequenced take on African music and American minimalism under his Harmonious Thelonious moniker since 2008. His new EP on meakusma is only the second one on a non-German label. On two tracks, Schwander takes his trademark rhythmically and melodically repetitive sound into straightforward Techno territory, although some heavy phasing gives the raw power and stoic repetition of these tracks an ambientish, post-club feel. Two other tracks further develop his typically eclectic and informed sound, playing live organ on one of them, displaying a jittery and jumpy rhythmic style that looks for a groove that until now did not exist. Jesse Hackett, a.k.a. Elmore Judd, delivers a remix that takes the original firmly into 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' territory, giving melody and rhythm a more open sense of space, and layering it with vocal samples to further add to a sense of Funk alien ation. This is serious and ex hilarating music!

Struments Records starts 2013 launching Nuevo Dia EP, second release of the label from Barcelona. In this occasion the reference is signed by the Catalan duo Aster, which counts with high quality remixers such as Benjamin Damage and Dexter. Nuevo Dia, the homonymous topic that starts and gives name to this second reference Struments Records, backs seven minutes in which multiple and varied melodies of different natures mix up with rhythmic patterns coming from a dynamic bass and evoking feminine vocal samples. A cut treated with strong dynamism in which the allusion of movement is constant. In Placido Domingo an acid bass line goes along the minutes transforming into the main character. The theme goes on for five minutes at a slower pace responding to the classical patterns of acid-house, introducing initially percussive rhythms, followed by dynamic involving notes and ending with a fantastic melodic take-off. The remix brought by Dexter i ncreases and decreases during seven minutes, converting the original melody into an easily adapting scale to the first hours of the night. Using vocal samples it gives a surrounding perspective and introduces a powerful bass perfectly suitable for this newer clubber version of Nuevo Dia. Benjamin Damage bends Nuevo Dia with frequencies and filters, darkening brief melodic spaces to introduce a powerful and raw drum which reveals a postindustrial background through the late hours of the night. The monotonic rhythms of this reconstruction include in itself a progression of a surrounding physical and mental dance.

OVERVIEW:
Last we heard of Australian three-piece PVT, they were exploring the outer reaches of electronic rock with their 2010 album Church With No Magic. The Australian trio have made a distinguished career out of making genrebending guitar music, carving themselves a reputation as sonic innovators, and in 2008 becoming the first band from their homeland to sign to iconic UK label Warp. All of which makes their new album Homosapien — their fourth studio album and Felte debut — a startling listening.

"Vertigo" is a standout track from said album. The initial synth line appears in slow-mo and is then smoothed out with a bassline which pulls you in from the beginning and never lets go. Techno producer Luke Abbott takes a hold of this synth sound and takes these ideas and stretches them out with great patience over several minutes without it ever losing its momentum or focus. Beat
constructionist Lukid creates a tumbling beat and pitches up the vocals while Hype Williams re-imagine the track entirely, casting it as the backdrop to a new set of vocals and movie sample snippets. Van Vizintin creates a moody, electronic recreation of the original.

Welcome to a journey into D&B’s deepest, darkest, dirtiest underbelly… Courtesy of Ram Records.

Your drivers on this mission are veteran producers Gridlok and Prolix. With pristine reputations and spotless discographies that span back to the turn of the century, the respective US/UK artists need little introduction… Both as solo artists or as a collaborative duo.

Their trip commences with ‘Membrane’, a turbo-charged rocket ride into drum & bass’s most alien landscapes.
