New Releases 5-6/13 (Cosmin TRG, Akron/Family. The Gaff, and Tons more!)

ANTHEM RECORDS -
NEW RELEASES 5-6-13..........

Good afternoon everyone! If you are reading this, and you live in Portland, I would like to say thank you for reading, and welcome to Summer. Of course, now that I've written that, surely it will immediately turn back into rain soaked spring, so should that happen, feel free to blame me for it. On the note of living local (Well, two notes actually) keep in mind you can come and pick any of this up the moment it arrives, thus avoiding any wait by the mailbox! I'm sure that's obvious to some, but hey, gotta say it......

Point two on the aforementioned note is Myself and a few regular supporters of this here list will be starting a laid back afternoon thing this Sunday (Tomorrow) called Boogie Brunch. It is exactly what it sounds like in name, which is a brunchtime turntable party, with the primary styles being Boogie/Disco, deeper House, and other complimentary bits from every genre from Dub/Reggae to the occasional guitar oriented thing (Think Young Marble Giants or Antena). It's every Sunday, 12 to 4 at the Crush Bar (at 1400 SE Morrison), which is well equipped for the other side of things, and makes a smashing Bloody Mary with practically a whole vegetable garden you have to fight through to get to the drink, and always has great brunch specials for any type of eater. For updates on this, mixes, and more details, like the FB page at this link:

...Lastly, Andrew Boie Dropped off an amazing 2XCD mix when he picked up his records this morning. Regardless of how up front you stay on the 12” and single side of things, this is about the best full listen of deeper and Dub style techno (along with some other stuff) you can find, and it perfectly fits the season. All tracks on the discs are tagged as well, so there really is no better way to get acquanted with the likes of Moodyman, Levon Vincent, STL, K-Alexi, and a ton of others. It's $9.99, and only available here, so message us back if you would like a copy.

JTC: People Mover 12" (ANSATZ 1001EP)
With the exception of the title-track, the People Mover EP is comprised of new tracks recorded by JTC especially for Ansatz. The tracks here represent JTC's ever-expanding repertoire: live synth and vocal-work dance above solid rhythms which JTC is known for. "People Mover" is anthemic, while "Solutions" is a solid, mellow dancefloor track with subtle build. "Banter Block" is a chaotic Afro-jazz carnival ride. "Juvenile Conversation" highlights some live synths over a techno Roland rhythm. Housed in a heavy cardboard sleeve with raised lettering and paste-on artwork.

SCHIKS, ARJUNA: Storyteller 12" (BUR 012EP)
Listening to Arjuna Schiks' first release on Burlesque Musique is like remembering a fairytale. The complex sound structures of "De Lege Naturae" open wide fields of unexplored territories to the listener. Letting him graze through these sound fields, the warm bass of "Regenboog" re-familiarizes the hearer's more acquainted dominions. Accompanied by the ardent sounds and fairy vocals of "Birds," the "Storyteller" ends his narration with a hymn which could last forever.

QUEENS: End Times LP (DIAL 027LP)
LP version with full-color double-sided insert. Scott Mou, known as one-half of the duo Jane -- the folk techno drone duo he had with Panda Bear -- as well as part of Manhattan's famous record store Other Music, debuts with his solo project, Queens. Johan Jacobsen describes the wonderful music of Queens "in oxymorons; 'colorful monochrome,' 'myopic depth,' 'sad joy,' 'driven slowness,' 'enlightened darkness,' 'universal intimacy,' 'ethereal earthboundness.' As it should be. Queens is one of those wonderful artists who are hard to catch on the fly, who escapes easy definition. His music is an unexpected and unimagined universe ready to be explored, and it's a universe that is wonderful to be in." When Dial Records' David Lieske and Peter Kersten listened to a performance of their New York based friend in 2009, it was one of those unforgettable, unique experiences you only have once in a long while these days. The idea of releasing an album was born. The production of End Times involved other label-mates such as Phillip Sollmann aka Efdemin (recording), Kassian Troyer (mixing) and Hendrik Weber, who once joined a life performance on stage with Scott Mou in 2012.

BLACK DOG, THE: Tranklements 3LP (DUST 038LP)
Triple LP version. Comes on 180 gram vinyl. Limited to 300 copies. The Black Dog have been gathering their thoughts, passions, and anger, reflecting it into their music, sometimes as part of a larger picture or concept, sometimes just focusing on one subject. Tranklements is such a great Sheffield word, it means "a collection of objects, often precious to the owner." Everyone has a collection of tranklements somewhere. Tranklements is a body of work created as 16 unique and individual tracks. Each one is its own little object, something created to externalize, explain and express the world the band find themselves in. It encompasses many thoughts, emotions and desires and there is an individual story and internal message behind each. They've all been discussed and fought for. However, The Black Dog don't really want to explain them -- they don't expect those personal rationales to translate to others. They would rather you gaze upon the objects yourself and come to your own conclusions. Nobody likes to be told what to think. In many ways, their work with the Electronic Supper Club project has helped them to reconnect with many things and each other. The creative talent and desires of the younger generation have never gone away. The real underground is still as vibrant as ever, not lost to false values, over-sized egos and ladder-climbing brands. The Black Dog have always respected that energy and individuality that exists beyond the bland compliant mainstream. The truth is, they have always felt like the awkward outsiders.

CINDYTALK: A Life Is Everywhere LP (EMEGO 167LP)
LP version. A Life Is Everywhere is an ecstatic mix of rhythm, noise, drone, texture, and melody. Simultaneously heartfelt and not for the faint-hearted. Within their self-contained world, Cindytalk continue the unique trajectory that has purveyed their career starting in 1982. This installment further explores the fearsome terrain that was initiated with previous Editions Mego releases such as The Crackle of My Soul and Hold Everything Dear. Throughout the six tracks on offer, the standard fair of music is run through serious level processes leaving, taking rhythm and sound to extreme limits while always retaining trace elements of their core. Ringing bells are interrupted by artifacts from shredded sound-matter, euphoric chords are swamped by chopped rhythms which succumb to an endless storm of electronic bliss. Utopia has never been so bold. The unique positioning of Cindytalk's output over a 30+ year period is a testament to the will to explore, unfettered by trend, taste and desire. This is unadulterated expression, a future music for those willing to confront the future as a viable option.

PRINCESS CENTURY: Lossless LP (KEN 005LP)
Princess Century is the alter ego of Maya Postepski, drummer and programmer with Domino Records -- signed Austra. Canada-born Maya also co-wrote and produced electronic outfit TRUST's debut album, which was released on the Arts And Crafts label in 2012: Pitchfork 7.3, NME 7/10, Guardian "New Band of the Day." Her anticipated debut album Lossless is a limited 180 gram heavyweight vinyl run with stunning minimalist sleeve design and insert artwork by Maya herself. Lossless was mastered by Psapp's Carim Classman at his Fishtank Studio. Maya toured the world with Austra throughout 2012 and the band received critical acclaim from radio and press on both sides of the Atlantic, including New York magazine, Spin, Drowned in Sound, The Guardian, NME, and BBC 6 Music. While touring with Austra, Maya DJ'd under her Princess Century moniker and also produced and remixed for the likes of Tesseomancy, Feathers, and Kool Thing. Lossless reveals a more playful, yet utterly heartfelt and sincere side to Maya Postepski than previous collaborative projects and shows off her production prowess and ear for odd electronic pop.

SVARTE GREINER: Black Tie CD (MIA 023CD)
After two bone-chilling full-lengths for the Type Recordings imprint, Erik K. Skodvin has embarked on his first journey for his own Miasmah label with Black Tie. While originally conceived as a soundtrack to an installation by Norwegian artist Marit Følstad, Skodvin uses this as a starting point to craft his most unnerving long-form pieces to date. Split into two distinct movements, "Black Tie" and "White Noise," we are exposed to the yin and yang of Skodvin's patented acoustic doom, and all the gravitas that it might contain. "Black Tie" was the piece which ended up being used in the installation itself, and is the closest to Skodvin's established sound as it stops time around its creaking cello, plucked strings and whispering ambience. Subtle and slow, the track blooms into a skeletal cloud of radio static and distortion before sinking back down to earth on those familiar moaning strings. With "White Noise" however, Skodvin takes us on a different journey, allowing panoramic synthesizer drones to take control while Middle Eastern strings chime in the distance. Transcendent and disarming, Skodvin manages to connect the dots between Biosphere, Thomas Köner and of course Deaf Center and still emerge with something fresh and unexpected. More than simply an accompanying work to an installation, Black Tie is a crucial new chapter in the Svarte Greiner evolution, and one that should give a few clues as to what might come next.

HYPNOLOVE: Ghost Carnival LP (REC 098LP)
Electro-pop mish-mash, menagerie of French horn and ante-Raphael-ish harps, counter-tenor male trio and female voices escaping from the room over there, at the end of the hallway. It's the carnival of the phantoms, a Day of the Dead in Mexico, with the Consul as an ill guide. At the helm, the Hypnolove trio, based in the south of France but with wide origins: French, Portuguese, German. Their first album, Eurolove and the hit "Mademoiselle" was released in 2006. Since that time, music has remained a passion: a group of true musicians, who perform for pleasure before everything, as if they were still teenagers infatuated with electro-pop, New Order or Pet Shop Boys, or, years later, sharing obscure bands, strange and stranger cryptic producers, uncertain records. Produced by Mickey Moonlight, the English ambassador to Ed Banger Records -- it had to take a scatterbrain like him to properly channel the trio. Nine titles in all, and above all else, a pop odyssey. Cover artwork by Yazbukey. Featuring guest appearances by Findlay Brown, Puro Instinct, and Freya Parry.

VA: Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & '80s 3LP/7" (SNDW 046LP)
Triple LP version. Comes with a bonus 7" and free MP3 download. Soundway Records present Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & '80s -- a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from East Africa. Spread out over two CDs and one triple LP set, Kenya Special is accompanied by detailed liner notes, original artwork and photographs. It follows on from Soundway's much-acclaimed African "Special" series that to date has focused on the highlife and Afrobeat output from 1970s Nigeria and Ghana. Kenya Special is a collection of 32 recordings (most of which were only ever released on small-run 45rpm 7" singles) that stand out as being different or unique as well as some classic genre standards. From Kikuyu language "liquid soul," Luo benga and Swahili Afrobeat, to genre-bending Congolese and Tanzanian tracks recorded in Nairobi, Kenya Special sees Soundway yet again taking the less-trodden path. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation, highlighting how diverse the music scene in Kenya was at the time. In 1970s Kenya the two threads of rumba and benga loosely dominated the music scene. Benga quickly became Kenya's unique contribution to Afro-pop; spreading like wildfire through the interior countryside with its fast, 4/4 machine-gun beat and intricate electric guitar layers. The Congolese take on Afro-Cuban rumba was introduced by touring bands, many of whom settled in East Africa -- influencing bands from Kenya and Tanzania to come up with their own take on this popular style. Alongside these styles were small ensembles and hotel-sponsored bands, playing a blend of music that often included rock 'n' roll riffs, elements of "Afro" music (influenced by West African musicians like Fela Kuti), and multiple other combinations from South African and Zambian guitar styles to disco, funk and Swahili coastal rhythms like chakacha. Painstakingly compiled, assembled and researched over two years by a team of five people from five countries (Kenya included), Kenya Special is a collection that looks beyond the mainstream and brings new life and recognition to some little-known gems and forgotten classics of Kenya's past.

FAITHFULL, MARIANNE: Broken English LP (AFZ 148LP)
"For Marianne Faithfull, 1979's Broken English was a radical departure, featuring a contemporary fusion of rock, punk, new wave, and dance, with liberal use of synthesizers. No one was prepared for the transformation of Marianne Faithfull's innocent flower child image, her immediately preceding albums had been in a relatively gentle folk or country and western style. Those who listened were in for a surprise, especially those who first heard her in the '60s as the virginal voice of her boyfriend, Mick Jagger's, 'As Tears Go By.' When seemingly she had disappeared entirely, she emerged with this dark but definitely musically modern work. And her voice! After years of drug abuse, her voice was in a lower register, far raspier, and had a more world-weary quality than in the past that matched the often raw emotions expressed in the newer songs. Broken English was widely hailed by critics and audiences alike on its release, a successful album without the aid of a huge hit single. The album reached # 57 on the UK album charts and # 82 in the US. The album contains some of her most famous songs, including the title track and 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan,' and was notable for the controversy surrounding the final number 'Why D'Ya Do It.' Although the boundaries have shifted in the decades since this album's release, the language is still shocking, the album is still as potent as ever and remains Marianne's masterpiece, and one of the best albums by a female vocalist ever." VANGELIS: Blade Runner Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP (AFZ 154LP)
"The Blade Runner soundtrack was composed by Vangelis for Ridley Scott's 1982 film, considered one of the finest sci-fi movies ever made. It is mostly a dark, melodic combination of classical compositions and synthesizers which mirrors the futuristic film noir envisioned by Scott. The soundtrack holds legendary status and at the time was well-received by fans and critics including Best Original Score nominations for a BAFTA and Golden Globe yet, except for a few cuts, it was not released until 1994. The movie remains a classic film with a long list of popular movie stars including Harrison Ford, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos, most of whom appear on this record in movie dialog samples mixed into the 12 tracks of nearly one hour of music. Vangelis makes each track flow into one another. The soundtrack features vocal contributions from Demis Roussos and the sax solo by Dick Morrissey on "Love Theme." The gatefold jacket includes many colorful stills from the film. Blade Runner is a timeless classic on film and now on 180 gram transparent red vinyl."

"Miles Davis' second great quintet, featuring Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock (age 25) on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums, is the last of Miles' true acoustic jazz bands. Formed in 1964, the legendary quintet can be heard playing at Chicago's Plugged Nickel jazz club on 22 December 1965, one of their earliest recordings. For these performances, Miles played almost no material from their studio albums, focusing instead on Miles' favorite jazz standards. However, it is precisely because he is playing the standards that listeners are able to hear just how groundbreaking this quintet was at the time. The music found here was so pioneering and influential that it still sounds new after over four decades."

"American singer/songwriter Townes Van Zandt released a string of classic albums in the early seventies, marking what has been called his most prolific and creative period. However, Van Zandt notoriously often had difficulty getting the right sound in studio, and his voice was often overshadowed by elaborate production work that sometimes missed the mark. Therefore, this LP, recorded at the University of Michigan's coffeehouse in 1973, is an essential addition to the Van Zandt discography because it allows listeners to hear Townes the way he was meant to be heard: playing to a few dozen college students with nothing but his acoustic guitar and his own voice. STETSON, COLIN: New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light CD (CST 092CD)
"Colin Stetson established himself as an intensely original solo composer and performer in 2011 with the release of the widely acclaimed New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges, which ended up on countless year-end lists. Anyone who has seen Stetson in solo performance can attest to the stunning physicality of his circular-breathing technique and capacity to produce a seemingly impossible palate of multiple voicings simultaneously in real time. New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light is the final installment in a trilogy of solo albums, again recorded live in single takes and again mixed by groundbreaking producer Ben Frost. Colin's membership in Bon Iver has also led to vocal contributions from Justin Vernon for this record, who appears on four songs, and whose voice constitutes the only overdubbing on the album. New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light is the most cohesive and fully realized of Stetson's solo albums to date. It should reliably stand as the apotheosis of the New History Warfare trilogy, and certainly signals the full flourishing of Stetson's unique talents as both composer and performer, pressing his arsenal of virtuosic techniques into the service of vivid, impassioned and conceptually astute songcraft."

AKRON/FAMILY: Sub Verses CD (DOC 078CD)
"The album started with visions of large monumental sounds inspired by Heizer and Turrell; American works on a grand scale, monuments, dirty hands and an epic American masculinity. Dust, stone, sky, earth. These broad, bold strokes would come to pass but not quite as expected. A sci fi aesthetic narrative emerged. Tackling distant pasts and future humanism, the pain and idiocy of our contemporary culture. How to deal with it open heartedly? The boredom, the sadness and speed. The plots within plots of Dune mirrored in many layers of sound. Creating 3D sonic atmospheres that our songs and singers inhabit. Our story, a story, all stories. Told in verses, in underground language, in sub frequencies. Not audible, only felt, intuited, imagined in some deepest psychic space that you are yet to know. A strange story. Of the future, of yourself. Of everyone. We are all we are, only this and yet we move forward. Along some line to somewhere. And who knows?"

Repressed. 180 gram vinyl exact repro reissue of Shuggie's 1971 album for Epic. "Shuggie wrote four of the album's seven tunes, did all the arrangements and helped Johnny with production suggestions. The senior Otis produced the set and allowed all of Shuggie's 'weird' ideas full-reign in production, and he was joined by a host of musicians from the first album, along with George Duke, Aynsley Dunbar and the backing chorus of Clydie King, Venetta Field and Shirley Matthews, among others. Shuggie plays a slew of instruments on the set. Its centerpiece is 'Strawberry Letter 23' that filled out Inspiration Information's reissue, but there are no weak cuts here. Sample the guitars on 'Sweet Thang,' 'Purple,' and 'Freedom Flight,' the latter displays two extended jamming exercises with lots of wondrously magical production touches; the former is a visionary bottleneck number that is warm and oozes soul. The bassline on 'Me And My Woman' prefigures that distorted keyboard bass P-Funk trademarked earlier, by two years." -- All Music Guide

CONNORS, LOREN: The Departing of a Dream LP (FV 011LP)
"Vinyl reissue of master guitarist Loren Connors' modern classic The Departing of a Dream -- the first of what would become a three volume series based loosely as tribute to Miles Davis' "He Loved Him Madly." This album finds Connors exploring slowly churned darkened hues -- each collapsing onto themselves like echoes of Miles' muted trumpet and Connors' signature ghost melodies. Since the late 1970s, Connors' use of haunted delta blues, minimalism and compositional underpinnings have become an avant-garde style synonymous to him. When The Departing of a Dream was released as a CD in 2002 it signaled a dramatic growth in Connors' sound by combining electric, acoustic and bass guitar with the unsettling ménage of subtle percussion and ambient hiss. Remastered from the master tape this 180 gram LP extends the closing two part suite 'For NY 9/11/01' with a bonus track. Comes with download code."

"Beacon's debut album The Ways We Separate both consolidates and develops these ideas: the album focuses, as the title suggests, on the idea of separation -- both within the context of relationships and in a more intimate, psychological sense. As Thomas Mullarney explains, 'The narrative contained inside The Ways We Separate deals with two kinds of separation: one where two entities grow apart, and the other where we grow apart from ourselves. Over the course of a relationship, the two sometimes happen together, one being the result of the other.'"

JOHNSON, OTIS G: Everything - God is Love 78 LP (NJR 009LP)
"For outsider gospel visionary and Detroit native Otis G. Johnson, the Holy Ghost was in the machine... in this case a rhythm-equipped Hammond organ. Everything - God Is Love 78, a singular 1978 mid-fi document, features android percussion against chords of Otis's own invention, possessed by minor tonality and frequent bum notes. Lifting it further are extemporaneous vocal homilies to the rapture, love, and everything, plus occasional 'other' voicings that scratch at the periphery of the mix. Homespun gospel rarely entered this dirge-like, intuitive space, nor did it commonly achieve such a spectral and captivating hymn to its darkest conventions."

"The third installment in Numero's series of otherworldly gospel, robed funk, and spiritual soul, Apocryphal Hymns is a slim new gospel songbook, penned powerfully by the genre's lesser-known disciples. Here, heavenly harmonies, psychedelic guitars, damaged sacred steel, a bleeding French horn, off-kilter choirs, and consumer-side electronic percussion decorate the Word, with performance modes that stray far from the flock, but hew always to the message. In homage to the stock jacket record industry of the 1970s, select one of these four alternate covers: woodland twilight, seashore morning, mountain waterfall, and sunbeam canyon."

HAXAN CLOAK, THE: Excavation CD (TRIANGLE 018CD)
"In 2011 with the release of his debut, self titled album, The Haxan Cloak (solo project of multi instrumentalist Bobby Krlic) appeared seemingly out of nowhere with an impressively fully formed sound that blew away most anyone who heard it. Recorded over the space of three years The Haxan Cloak was a wildly ambitious fusion of malevolent strings, junkyard found-sounds and primitive percussion. In the two years since the release of his debut, Krlic relocated to London and began working on its epic follow up, and Tri Angle Records debut, Excavation. Bolstered by the concept he was developing for his follow up and a desire to challenge himself into new terrains, Krlic has evolved his sound to incorporate more of his electronic influences. The result is an album awash with serrated beats and cavernous sub-bass, meshing with the classical drones and ghostly details The Haxan Cloak fans will have already been accustomed to. Whereas The Haxan Cloak was a dense, and at times, suffocating listen, Excavation finds Krlic confidently adopting a more minimalist approach, experimenting with space and silence without forsaking any of the intensity that made his debut such a powerful statement of intent."

The first in a new exclusive white label series, ASC provides two highly anticipated tracks that have been doing the rounds for quite some time now. Another Late Night’s dubby bass line and half step beats made it a sure-fire Autonomic anthem, never leaving the record bags of Instra:mental and dBridge for well over a year. It’s been featured on many mixes, including ASC’s Resident Advisor podcast, and always singled out for praise. It’s uplifting keys and stabs mesh seamlessly with the beats and bass and form an undeniably catchy rhythm. Gestures starts where ASC’s classic ‘Porcelain’ left off. Emotive keys, uplifting pads and strings and a unique rhythm section. Catchy synthetic bass is introduced to maximum effect and in true ASC style, the whole track comes together in a seriously polished way. http://soundcloud.com/rinsefm/sets/royal-t-i-know-you-want-me-ep/s-VxSsU
Royal T’s first release for Rinse since last year’s Rinse Presents: Royal T full-length finds the young grime producer on fine, rowdy form. Over the past couple of years Mark Taylor has been among the forefront of a new generation of producers devoting themselves to the art of the grime instrumental and its potential to be devastatingly powerful club music. Alongside forefathers like Terror Danjah and D.O.K, and contemporaries such as Swindle, Faze Miyake and Champion, his hyper-chromatic, high-energy productions have consistently worked to push the genre’s essence in new directions.
Lead track ‘I Know You Want Me’ is a powerful case in point. An addictive, future-shocked hybrid that melds the bubbly swing of speed garage and two-step with grime’s bumpy and distorted bass blasts, it rockets along at dizzying pace. ‘Saints’ is a classic, handclap-led grime tune, driven along by pirouetting synth arpeggios that rush up and down the register like a fairground carousel gone wild. ‘Inside The Ride VIP’ inverts ‘Inside The Ride’, turning it into a thrillingly chaotic, scattergun version of the unerringly focused original, which was released last year via Rinse.
As the triplet-led, disorienting rhythms of trap have become ubiquitous across UK and US dancefloors, so UK producers have been using them to inject grime with a new rhythmic energy. ‘Koopa Shell’ is a particularly smart and inventive exploration of the point at which grime atmospheres meet trap rhythms – its booming bass and multiple melodic/percussive layers appear to be continually shifting in multiple directions at once, making for a dizzying whirlwind of a club track. It’s testament to Taylor’s skill as a musical shapeshifter – he’s able to draw from all manner of sources to inject his music with energy and vitality.

DISLTD009 – M-Zine, Scepticz & Detail – Point Of No Return / Reflexions – 10″ Vinyl  $⑧
DISLTD009 see’s the Belgian onslaught continue with the second April release for Dispatch Ltd This time following up from April’s earlier intercontinental affair, three of Belgians finest exports bring “Point of No return”, “Reflexions” and “Chronicles” to Dispatches Ltd outlet. Mzine and Scepticz production rate is nothing short of prolific and this is certainly reflected here in both the creative content and production quality, all three tracks carry their familiar and now signature stripped back sonic soundscapes, truly illustrating that by adding less, more can definitely be achieved! Each single element is carefully sculpted and positioned within its own frequency space with the highest level of precision, leaving that all important, perfect measure of room to allow all of the low frequency content to breath and cut through to maximum effect. “Point of No Return” has understandably been a s taple inclusion for most of Skeptical and Ant TC1′s recent sets and “Reflexions” was aired by Xtrah on Frictions Radio 1 show guest Mix, a clear testament to the release’s high standard. Tunes like these purely reflect all of those essential & inherent qualities that have driven this music through two decades, music that truly looks forward and continues to explore sonic possibility, examples that once again prove that Drum and Bass Music is still one, (If not the!) most progressive and future thinking musical genres of our time.

CRIT070 – Emperor – Begin EP – 12″ Vinyl  $⑧
One of the UK’s freshest new drum & bass talents drops his debut solo single on Critical, this one is simple mammoth! Emperor has been making waves over the past couple of years moonlighting with various camps but it was the keen ear of label boss Kasra that cottoned on early drawing him deep into the Critical ranks. If this new single is anything to go by, one of the best decisions Critical could have made. The cinematic intro of ‘Begin’ is beautiful blend of strings, reversed fx and the sultry vocals of Georgia Yates who featured on the Enei album last year. All build to a haunting dropout before the next stage, an absolute nasty tech-stepping future roll-out that’s been getting Fabric in sweat these last few months. Twisted, uplifting and wonderfully emotive, this is another slice of Critical magic. Next up and we’re treated to the vintage double-bass grooves of ‘She Said’. Another huge epic intro featuring a soaring vocal drifting over ethereal pads features here as hi-end percussion leads into the fattest bassline for a properly funked up dance floor workout. Think Roni Size ‘Brown Paper Bag’ or Peshay’s ‘Miles From Home’ for 2013…bad to the bone!

Alix Perez         'Chroma Chords EP’  2 X 12"   $①④
SHA066          (Shogun Audio)
B/C:  666017261263                           20th May
* Shogun Audio is very proud to present the brand new sophomore album from the unstoppable, wholly original, Alix Perez. Having laid his foundations firmly within drum & bass over the past eight years it was his debut LP back in 2009 that set a precedent for his musical ambition as ‘1984’ astounded critics and fans the world over from the broadsheets to the bloggers. ‘Chroma Chords’ marks the new chapter; a multi-genre tour de force, a thoroughbred electronic musical masterpiece that casts Alix Perez in a league all of his own.
In the words of Alix Perez...“Essentially, ‘Chroma Chords’ is a snapshot of my past, present and future. It encapsulates a sonic translation of experiences, influences and genuine emotion.
Without straying too far from the work I'm previously known for, it's a testament to experimentation, development and a display of things to come. Leaving compromise aside altogether, this album is an honest reflection of my standpoint as an electronic artist.
While revisiting preceding ground yet touching on new avenues, my point with ‘Chroma Chords’ is to defy preconceptions while staying true to my sound and identity. Intently indulging and lending itself to a world of influences it's a platform for new ideas, pushing boundaries and steering away from habitual patterns.
Whatever the listener's interpretation, I really hope that they enjoy it. Sincerely,
Alix”

* Having enjoyed the honour of launching the label last summer with the highly acclaimed ‘Firethorn’ and ‘Pandorum’, Frankee’s doubled his dynamite with no less than four dancefloor-focussed slices of absolute bass gold.
* Showcasing his creative range with depth and clarity, every element on this EP is coated in a robust sense of timeless drum & bass magic and melody: Nodding at the scene’s rich past, while pushing us as far into the future as possible, each cut will quickly find its way to the very top of your playlist.
*We launch with ‘Harlequin’, a purring roller that’s devilishly simple but demonically effective. A groaning bassline and tubular subs vie for your attention as the steppy riddim drills the message home with such razor-sharp punctuation, each additional percussive element that’s added as the track develops causes major chaos.
* Next-up ‘Paranormal’. An instant hair-raiser, the quintessential pitched down pianos conjure up 25 years of rave heritage in one simple reverberated strike. Then, before nostalgia kicks in too much, in fires a scorching bassline that grizzles and kicks its way through the mix with uncompromising menace. If you thought the low-end growls of Frankee’s previous release were stuff of legend, just wait until you hear this bass behemoth!
* Saffron’ follows. Oozing low-end luxury and a swift, skippy riddim, it’s an instant groove massage laced with floating vocal textures and emotive, ethereal pads. An instant hypnotiser, it instantly flies your floor to places they didn’t even know existed. Paying respect to the expensive, aromatic delicacies of its namesake, ‘Saffron’ more than lives up to its name.
* Finally we hit ‘Flintstone’. Concluding this epic tale with a wry grin, it’s the perfect balance of deep, dark rollage and subtle humour. The overwhelmingly warm sub squiggles, icy pads and textured percussive dynamics make this track a must for all record boxes!

  • Ram Records are delighted to announce their second new signing of 2013… Chords. A man who’s rise through the ranks
of drum & bass has been astonishing. Not surprising; producers who shine with such crisp musicality and production power
on their earliest releases always get spotted quickly. And after his previous smashers, the next chapters in his exciting
career will be written with Ram. In the words of Andy C..
    * “Chords is an incredible talent. His melodies, textures and arrangements are next level… We’re very excited about this
producer… He’s gonna blow some minds!”
    * The mind blowing starts with a deep hypnosis session. Deep, warm and relentlessly pumping, ‘Biting Point’ is one long
piano pounding shock out. Rolling and rush-soaked with a timeless progressive sound palette, this one’s an elevator –
enveloping your floor into a trancelike state, ready for the next level.
    * Our minds continue to blow as we hit ‘Amygdala’. Literally: It takes its title from a crucial part of your brain that powers
memory and emotional senses. Opening with a deep wash of synths and faraway thunder drama drums, we’re soon
whisked off on a distorted bass roller coaster, dipping and rising on a hooky, infectious riff. Memories of the opening,
inward-looking synth intro are soon triggered as we hit the breakdown. The only emotions your amygdala will be triggering
right now are happiness and love.
    * Confident yet understated, these are two purring pieces of full-bodied contemporary D&B. Consistent in their quality but
triggering different sonic senses and dancefloor motions, this marks a very exciting new chapter for both Chords and Ram
    Records.
    * Tracklist: A. Biting Point AA. Amygdala

HOUSE/TECHNO/DISCO........

50 WEAPONS (GERMANY):

EXCLUSIVELY DISTRIBUTED IN NORTH AMERICA:

COSMIN TRG: Gordian 2LP (50 013LP)
Gatefold double LP version. Modeselektor's 50 Weapons label releases the second artist album by Romanian Cosmin TRG. Since that debut, the now Berlin-based Cosmin has toured the globe, taking his rusted techno frequencies to places like Fabric, Berghain and Sónar, at the same time as releasing more essential EPs on Rush Hour and 50 Weapons. The new album marks something of a new direction for Cosmin, however -- it's a much more intricate affair that deals in plenty of fuzzy texture, percussive energy and his trademark skimming bottom-ends, but looks outside the techno world for its influences. As the artist himself explains, "The title references an ancient myth, but describes the very contemporary, impossible task of discerning between real and replicated, authentic and contrived. Coping with facts, objects and bodies, the necessity of 'making it,' fear of failure, fear of 'not being happy' are today's topics, and Gordian is my attempt at an exploration of those issues." Starting with the deep, alien-laced ambience of "New Structures for Loving," it's clear from the off Cosmin's production has continued to improve and evolve since Simulat. Abstract yet heartfelt, it's followed by the more implosive snare rattles and crossing synth lines of the title-track, which sounds like a factory gone feral. Opposing light with dark, density with space, tracks like "Desire Is Sovereign" manages to be both propulsive and cerebral. One thing that ties the album to Cosmin's nuanced back-catalog is the gauziness of tracks like "Divided By Design," where the distant hum of radio frequencies turn your thoughts to Cold War-era transmissions lost in blizzards of snow. Though the heads-down surges of tracks like "Semi Present" sure will work on the floor, there's an underlying narrative that makes this album as suitable for listening on headphones. Non-standard melodies, otherworldly blips and a ruined intergalactic energy seem to course throughout, truly transporting you to another world entirely.

EXCLUSIVELY DISTRIBUTED IN THE U.S. (NO EXPORTS):

ROGER, FRANCK: Extensions of Yesterday 2LP (CCS 075LP)
Double LP version with 8 out of 11 tracks from the CD. In his years of service to the groove, Franck Roger has evolved slowly and calmly, staying true to his fundamental sound without ever resting for too long. From his allegiance with Real Tone Records to commissions from such legends as Masters At Work, Franck has represented that most dependable and humble of talents; never following the hype or tapping into overused approaches in a genre that has been operating for more than 30 years. In all this time, Franck has only ever delivered one previous album, and so Circus Company is pleased to bring a seriously overdue album to light that embraces the classicism of true house music while writing a new chapter in his on-going story. For sure, there are moments of heart-warming familiarity on Extensions of Yesterday, and this is no more apparent than in the soulful croon of Franck's long-standing vocalist of choice, Mandel Turner, on centerpiece track "Sands of Time." With a punchy, feel-good energy, the track explores the very idea the title of the album points to. There is an abundance of passion and pride for the good old days, but this is about bringing that feeling forwards rather than trying to go back to it. Away from these more flamboyant moments, the album moves into more searching, adventurous tones. There is a hypnotic, dubby sensibility to a lot of the tracks, as luxurious chords echo around unmistakable Roger percussion. You can just as easily find yourself roused by soaring techno visions full of empowering melodies, or subconsciously slide down into smoked-out boogie for the 21st century. While all around him young upstarts attempt to define their sound through the achievements of their forefathers, Franck Roger strides with a maturity that can only come from one who has already done yesterday and now looks to the next logical step.

BRATTEN, ANDRE: Be a Man You Ant 2LP (FP 009LP)
André Bratten was born in Oslo and grew up in a suburb of the Norwegian capital, which borders on the deep, dark Scandinavian forest. Like most kids in the late 1990s, he was bitten by the hip-hop bug, but he also got turned on by the Led Zeppelin records he picked out from his father's record collection. He's broadminded enough to be into everything from the Norwegian electronica masters Røyksopp to Metro Area, Sigur Rós, Eno, Cluster, and Weather Report. Currently dwelling in the heart of the city, his efforts with the synthesizer coincided with a huge boom in Norwegian electronic music, his productions recently came to the attention of Norwegian cosmic disco mogul Prins Thomas and his Full Pupp colony. Andre's tracks share the exploratory vibe of the '80s synth-pop pioneers, and misfit electronic pop musicians like John Foxx, who were forced to learn to sculpt new sounds with new tools. Yet he updates those sounds to a contemporary rhythm matrix, in parallel with the day-glo analog dance music of Lindstrøm, Todd Terje, and Prins Thomas himself . His debut album, Be a Man You Ant, computes almost infinite variations on the sounds he could extract from a single modular synthesizer. So you'll find squelchy bugs in the bass-bin, weird analog squeegee smears, bright drum machine splats and the occasional significant pause. The spaces in his music are at least as important as what fills it. Listen to the movement of "I Am Square," how he gets a yearning effect from a few vapor-trail synth wipes. Or the vivid, neon synth solos in "Aegis" and "Second Steepest." "Libra" is as stripped-back as a late '90s Cologne minimal joint. André Bratten's music rejects coziness and whimsy, and steps away from pleasing the crowd.

HEINRICHS & HIRTENFELLNER: Lenz 2LP (SUPDUB 031LP)
DJ duo Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner present their second album called Lenz. In defiance of breakup rumors, their latest stroke of genius promises to arouse spring feelings for all electronic music fans. In the summer of 2011, acclaimed DJs Alfred Heinrichs and Sascha Braemer had already conceived the initial ideas of their new album. In the meantime, the pair kept busy working on solo projects and remixes for various DJs and labels as well as keeping active international careers. In spring of 2012, in order to increase and intensify the creative process of the project, the two Berliners expelled themselves from the noisy and restless metropolis to an isolated timberland bungalow. Leaving all forms of communication behind, they were delivered pure inspiration from the soft sounds and impressive backdrop of Mother Nature herself. An intimate bond was forged with her, bringing to life the tracks, "Sunrise," "Nature," and "Firewood," all of which evoke a vestal semblance, emulating the place of their conception. The debut album Dark Orbit (HIGH 062CD/LP) was characterized by penetrating underground techno combined with scattered dark elements. In contrast, Lenz shines in a whole new light with a more mature sound stemming from their previous natural limits of minimal and house, inspired by their tireless, yet motley work over recent years. Guided by the idealistic beauty of their setting, Heinrichs and Hirtenfellner knowingly combined their ideas and inspirations into a collaborative project, dyeing the color of their signature sound anew. Lenz arises more pleasant, reflective and brighter than its predecessor, with multifaceted and impulsive beats as well as a harmonious and melodious sound. The album also features collaborations with the soulful voices of Viviana Alvarez and Fabian Reichelt and masterfully harmonizes elements of genres ranging as far as soul and pop to create an atmospheric melody to mesmerize every ear.

Next up the Aussie dudes Andy Hart & Max Graef craft a funking slow house jam in the shape of “Dem Young Jabronis”, all warm chords and bumping beats.

Over on the flip MermaidS show why they’re some serious contenders for a big breakthrough this year – “Run With The Night” shifts through the gears for 5 minutes before breaking into downright euphoric territory. Rounding things off the mysterious Riff Clichard takes some time out from polishing his Intergalactic Jensen Interceptor to chop up some 80s beats to give us “Through With Love”

Tracklisting:
A1. Darvaza 1
B1. Darvaza 2
B2. Darvaza 3

Sales Notes:

The follow up to the sell out debut. Essential sludge for the clubs!

After taking us on a hellish journey through the dark corners of the human psyche on their debut EP for the freshly minted Copicat Tracs, Watkins and Almadovar return with another set of nefariously charged tracks on ultra-black wax. We're still none the wiser as to who this diabolical duo are. In fact, it's more of a mystery than ever before. They're sound is one drenched in ethyl poisons, the result of a grim pact between two old shooting buddies to be executed before the final days of the alcoholacaust. One can only imagine this gnarled pair holed up in a lodge in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands, twisted spines hunched over machines inscribed with words written in an ancient and forgotten tongue, the smell of whisky so strong it closes the throat. This new trip sees Watkins & Almadovar in a somewhat reflective mood: whether they're reflecting on an old encounter with an African Death Cult, or a visit to Boleskine House to uncover the lost writings of Crowley is anyone's guess…

Side A is a jacking, industrial burner, and if Rock N Roll is indeed the music of the Devil, lord knows who this crust belongs to. The brooding chords of the first chapter make another appearance here, underpinned by a maddening rhythm culled from the cogs of a real horse rotorvator. Side B gives us a slice of ye olde Black Bleep and traditional Samhain Acid. Funk for cunts that operates between the physical via ritualistic body popping and the third mind. What would shed f urther light on the meaning or origin of all this bad vibin' would be the fact that all of these tracks share the name of "Darvaza". Budding geographers out there will know Darvaza as the colossal natural gas field in Turkmenistan which is also known as the "Door to Hell". While Soviet petrochemical scientists were drilling for gas there in 1971, a large area of ground collapsed beneath the drilling rig. Hazardous gases were released as a result, and to put a lid on the problem, the scientists decided to burn it all off by igniting the gas, expecting it to burn off within days. To this very day the Door to Hell is still wreathed in flame. "The pungent smell of burning sulfur pervades the area for some distance". Aye, sounds about right…

B3. Station North
B4. Precision
B5. Serum

Sales Notes:
Lil Jabba isn't like the rest of them. While they're busy joining the dots between house and techno or whatever's safe right now, he's throwing paint all over the page. He's not American, but he's affiliated with Chicago’s Teklife crew (DJ Spinn, DJ Rashad, etc.) and divides his time between Baltimore and Brooklyn, exhibiting his visual art, riding around with his bike gang and making some of the most hypnotic juke and footwork you'll ever hear. Local Action have been figuring out a release with him for over a year - eventually an EP wasn't enough, and they persuaded him to make it a full-length album, Scales.

Some of Scales has already seen the light of day through Youtube or limited cassette releases, some of it is unheard. Some tracks sound cleaner than others; that's because they're newer. That's how these things work. What is consistent throughout Scales is the quality: across 12 tracks, Jabba flips, twists and inverts the footwork template with endless layers of samples, gurgled vocal tags, jazz licks and whatever else he feels like. These aren't trax, they're tapestries.

SU003 – Christian Piers – Clocked Decay – 12″ Vinyl  $⑧

REALIGN001 – Pattern – Draft (AnD Remix) – 12″ Vinyl  $⑨
Pattern is the latest innovative new artist to emerge from Manchester’s burgeoning bass music scene. By day working in the infamous Eastern Bloc record shop while by night joining the production ranks of fellow Mancunian luminaries like Synkro and Indigo. His debut, the sublime “Draft”. “Draft” is in every respect rebel music. A mix of opposites pulling together before equally repelling. Tonal bells and pads flow over coarse bass sounds and punching kicks. Meanwhile subdued apache breaks reference a musical root within drum & bass, set against Pattern’s vision of modern 170 BPM music. Staying true to the release’s Manchester theme, AnD deliver an unapologetically hard remix. A relentless 4/4 kick sets the pace for a complete reinterpretation of Pattern’s original composition. This is a Manchester remix, but it is infused with the sounds of Detroit, Berlin and Industrial noise. This is powerful stuff! Support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Endian (CMX) and Organic.

12DVMUTE4 – Diamond Version – EP4 – 12″ Vinyl  $⑨
Resident Advisor “…precision-tooled and impeccably sculpted club tracks, powered by the duo’s characteristic strobing rhythms and flecked with absurdist humour.” Dazed Digital “…heavy-hitting, wildly-crescendoing, full throttle…” Diamond Version craft music that’s somehow simultaneously futuristic and archaic. On the surface, its static effervescence and mechanistic precision evoke the march of technology and the sinister detachment of late capitalist society. But it affects listeners on a more instinctive level, interfacing directly with the nervous system and rendering the polyphonic chatter of the body’s impulses crisp and cold. There’s something oddly permanent about they rhythms they unearth, as though they’re simply tapping into a deeper pulse that’s always been present within their circuitry. Diamond Version is a collaborative project between two of the most groundbreaking, experimental and forward thinking operators in modern music, Olaf Bender and Carsten Nicolai. As joint heads of the Berlin-based label Raster-Noton and with solo projects Alva Noto (Nicolai) and Byetone (Bender), for over a decade they have been releasing work that spectacularly blurs the lines between the visceral and the conceptual, bridging the gap between gallery and dancefloor. Diamond Version release the latest instalment in their series of EPs leading up to an album in summer 2013.

SHADES009 – Dan White – Simple Pleasures EP – 12″ Vinyl  $⑨
After a string of releases under different pseudonyms, Shades is truly excited to announce Dan White’s first release under his own name, Simple Pleasures. Influenced by the lush melodics of early Kompakt releases, the playful grooves and all-out pop sensibility of Dusky & Booka Shade’s output, and the edgy, detailed electro of pioneers like the The Hacker and Alexander Robotnick, this bold four-tracker of emotive tech-disco is progressive & modern, yet packed full of feeling. Opener Mind & Heart feat. longtime collaborator Rudi Crone sets the stage in auspicious fashion, expertly folding brooding synths and melancholic vox snatches into an atmospheric slice of twilight disco-house that wears its darkness lightly. Follower Always (co-produced by Tjorven) offers a lighter, more summery vibe, setting ripe keys, jacking beats and plump basses against more accomplished vo cal sample work. On the flip, things are taken a bit deeper and more uptempo with pensive deep house roller Inquest, and late-night stormer Deluge, which jacks things up further before melting into dreamy, evocative synths dripping with longing and wanderlust. All in all it’s hard to play favourites here; each idea arrives fully-formed but never overcooked, a testament to the inimitable talent at the helm.

Acid Mondays
Salvia Sessions EP
Illussion Rec | ILL007
12inch

$⑨

Illusion007 has a licence to kill, coming courtesy of Illusion Family members Acid Mondays with a stunning remix at the hands of Detroit legend Delano Smith. The 'Salvia Sessions EP' takes you on a rhythmic, hypnotic, tribal laced House journey into the inner workings of the cosmic duo's minds. Lead track 'Got To Get Higher' hypnotic house vibe is pumped along by the duo's cajual-esque drums, which intertwine beautifully with layer upon layer of vocals, FX and a thunderous sub-bass to create a monster of a club track ready for the biggest dance floors. On remix duties Detroit's Delano Smith for his first outing on the label and boy he does deliver. Delano pumps up the tempo and vibe and builds an insatiable groove around his typically classy motor city beats and eerie strings, delicately seducing elements of the original hooks in and out of rework to create a mesmerising, lo opy dance floor House bomb! On the B-side, the duo contrast the A-side with two tracks which ar e a little deeper and take their inspirations from many a Monday in Ibiza. 'Me! I'm Over Here' builds its structure around their typical solid drums and layered vocals, pumping along consistently bar two long breaks, which provide the track with two much needed breaths in preparation for the fist pumping that commences after the beats kick back in. 'Watching Eastwood' takes a more slung back, sultry vibe, showcasing a deeper side to the duo's usual pumping club tracks. The suggestive vocals entice you in and the funk of the b-line and beats get the head nodding and the hips shaking. This EP is prime dance floor material and reinforces the fact that Acid Mondays are a cosmic, tea-drinking force to be reckoned with!! Acciiiiidddddd!!!

Second of two new bass-infected dub EP's with a hint of techno by the Japanese Mystica Tribe. Titletrack ''Stars Are Mine'' and ''His Temple'' immediately set off to deep dub and bass territories in these two typical Mystica Tribe excursions: grooving, but dark with lots of effects and tribal influences. ''Prayer'' evolves around a catchy melodica that won't leave your head for days or maybe even weeks and ''Zen Stone'' tops it off perfectly with this gloomy scifi dubtrip.

Another set of prolific remixes of the Belgian Red Stars Over Tokyo. His 'Building Houses' has been re-imagined by Machinefabriek as a heavily sound-based piece that escapes easy definition. The remix has an improvised flow and a very natural feel to it. The track sets its own limits but crosses them time and again. A languid melody line on top gives a sense of emotional direction, but its rhythmic energy hints at the track being stuck in an echo chamber, whilst bouncing off the walls and off itself. Vindicatrix delivers two remixes of 'Building Houses'. His informed idiosyncrasy dwells through these two tracks, linking them to the darker side of Techno, UK Bass and post-rave culture. Both tracks have a broken feel to them, delivering their message in jolts and bouts, whilst ending things up with a strong sense of ecstatic relief.
