PRURIENT: Through the Window LP (BLACKEST 002LP)
Repressed; LP version. Through the Window is the new album by Prurient, his first for Blackest Ever Black. It is, in a sense, both the conclusion and the climax of the journey that Dominick Fernow began with 2011's Many Jewels Surround the Crown 7" and continued with that year's Bermuda Drain LP and Time's Arrow EP. The three pieces featured on Through the Window, including the 18-minute title-track, also represent the ultimate expression of Fernow's affection for European techno forms, and his ability to apply them to his own uniquely lacerating purpose.

ROEDELIUS: Selbstportrait Vol. III/Reise durch Arcadien CD (BB 126CD)
"The long overdue reissue of Selbstporträt III/Reise durch Arcadien closes a gap in the Roedelius oeuvre which his followers have long since had their eyes on. Those who found the self-portrait series irresistible had to endure a lengthy, impatient wait for the Journey Through Arcadia. As on the other releases in this series, the pieces on Reise durch Arcadien are musical sketches, fleeting ideas and aphorisms of a musician whose exuberant imagination assumes tonal form in almost every moment of his life. Created between 1973 and 1978 and recorded with decidedly modest technical equipment, this music reflects Roedelius' most intimate, wholly undisguised vision of humane music. Almost casually, Roedelius offers us as listeners direct access to his artistic riches. Neither seeking to impose himself upon us, nor setting out to impress, he simply wishes to share with us something he could barely put into words. Utterly detached from time, stylistically unique, these tracks could easily be contemporary creations. Only the questionable recording quality (common to the majority of the self-portrait pieces) hints at a bygone age. This in no way diminishes the musical quality, however. On the contrary, it serves to emphasize the spontaneity and authenticity of the sketches. Roedelius was not interested in creating smoothly polished, perfect electronic music productions. His artistry lies in capturing musical ideas which appear like flashes of lightning and developing them through improvisation. With this in mind, he always pressed record on his tape machine when he sat down at the keyboard, channeling his thoughts, feelings and moods into music. In such moments of inspiration, there was simply no space to consider sound quality, dynamics, tonal balance or special sound effects. Music was born in Roedelius, it flowed out of him in real time, unfiltered, and was caught on tape by the assiduous recording device." --Asmus Tietchens (from the liner notes)

TULLY: Loving Is Hard LP (CH 101LP)
LP version. Includes download card for the entire album, plus a bonus 1971 single. Luminous third and final album, Loving Is Hard, originally released in 1972, is the latest in Chapter Music's reissue series of Australian psychedelic icons, Tully. This follows the 2010 release of Live at Sydney Town Hall 1969-70 (CH 076CD), and 2012's reissue of the solemn, dreamy 1971 surf soundtrack Sea of Joy (CH 080CD/LP). Even before they began recording Loving Is Hard in late 1971, Tully had officially broken up. Over the previous 12 months, they had shifted from the towering, organ-driven rock dynamics of their 1970 self-titled debut, to a serene, contemplative folk-psych sound. Show-stopping drummer Robert Taylor and original vocalist Terry Wilson had departed, replaced by guitarist Colin Campbell and singer Shayna Stewart, both of cult folk heroes, Extradition. Although the change created music of stark, unearthly beauty, Tully had been massively popular in Sydney as a rock band, and their spiritually-driven transformation left many fans scratching their heads. Audiences declined steadily, response to the Sea of Joy soundtrack was muted, and by the end of 1971 they realized they could no longer continue. Still, they had one more album owing on their record contract, and decided to make a final statement before going their separate ways. Thankfully for us, in hindsight Loving Is Hard is an elegant triumph, all the more affecting for the turmoil that went into its making. The record's centerpiece is Colin Campbell's seven-and-a-half minute masterwork "Ice," originally recorded by Extradition for their 1971 album Hush, and later covered by Margret Roadknight. Shayna Stewart's voice is sublimely dispassionate, while the string arrangement by keyboardist Michael Carlos gives the song an imposing grandeur. The title-track, with lyrics by Campbell and music by bassist Ken Firth, is a summation of what the band were going through at the time, and for that reason is perhaps the most emotionally resonant track on the record. Stewart's gentle vibrato matches Carlos' pulsing Hammond organ, and the resignation in Campbell's lyrics is reinforced by Firth's slow, haunting melody. Saxophone, clarinet and flute player Richard Lockwood opens the album with the stately "Love Can Make You," and sets a poem by fellow Meher Baba-devotee Francis Brabazon to solo piano accompaniment. As bonus tracks, this reissue appends Tully's one and only single, the sparse and somber 1971 release Krishna Came/Lord Baba. Like Sea of Joy before it, Loving Is Hard possesses a profound, serene beauty worlds removed from anything else happening in Australia at the time. Along with Tully's other albums, it has had to wait far too long to be rediscovered.

IN FLAGRANTI: Best of Dissimilated By-Products 2011-2012 LP (CRE 042LP)
Since the end of 2011, In Flagranti have released a series of three exclusive digital releases on junodownload. The first was issued from November-December 2011 then from April-May 2012 and finally November-December 2012. It was an exercise to try and release a new track with a video every Monday for two weeks, which varied in style from disco re-edits to deep house to Balearic to the obscure. Some of the feedback was: "is this going to be on vinyl?" So, In Flagranti decided to pick the best-sellers and the tracks that got the most feedback from DJs and sales people and release it on a 12" vinyl LP. All the tracks have been re-mastered/edited to fit the album format without losing sound quality and the lacquer was cut at Abbey Road Studio in London.

OLD KOMM: Ventspils LP (CREP 008LP)
"старые комм" (loosely translated as "Old Komm") are Andrey Kolmogorov and Sergey Gorsky, a musical duo hailing from the city of Samara, Russia. Since meeting in the mid-'90s, the duo started translating their musical ideas by making industrial music using a mixture of field recordings, broken synths, found sound and, what became a constant motif on their output, church pipe organs -- Sergey's father was a church organist of 40 years, giving the duo plenty of material to tamper with. Isolated from any Western influence and attention, the duo issued a handful of extremely limited releases on a now-defunct Russian label (Svarog Records). The results were unique slabs of industrial music with strong nods to primitive techno, sound design, and noise music. For lack of an audience as well as poor distribution, the tapes were mostly handed out to friends and family until one reached the Discrepant radar a couple of years back. Today, Discrepant presents an exclusive EP of their first work in years, constructed around the sounds recorded in the ex-USSR Baltic port city of Ventspils, Latvia. During a recent visit in 2010, the duo were inspired by the decaying post-industrial charm of the city and decided to re-activate their musical activities. Pressed in an edition of 250 vinyl-only copies and packed in a luscious printed outer and inner sleeve with photography by Sergey Gorsky.

DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL: Live in Dub & The Victor Rice Remixes CD (EB 093CD)
Dub Spencer & Trance Hill are back with a bang and in their favorite place: on stage. This is a blast of sheer live energy that slips down as nicely as Jamaican honey. The tracks on this album were recorded at various concerts in 2012. Each track is so catchy, you'll struggle to stop humming it. It pulses in your stomach, it breathes under your skin and it glitters in your ears. The Swiss musicians have worked with the Hamburg-based dub label Echo Beach since 2006, and to date the collaboration has produced five albums. Another equally prominent protagonist on this project is the Munich sound and dub specialist Umberto Echo, who for the past two years has regularly accompanied the band on tour and who also performs on the mixing desk as a fifth instrumentalist. Umberto Echo recorded and produced the tracks on this album, magnifying Dub Spencer & Trance Hill's space. The nine live tracks are supplemented by six remixes by the acclaimed dub technician Victor Rice. The New York-born artist, who played bass for The Scofflaws Ska, has lived in São Paulo since 2002. Here, in 2004, he recorded his debut album In America, which explores and refines dub techniques. Unlike the old school pioneers King Tubby or Augustus Pablo, the influence of ska is very noticeable in his remixes. Live in Dub bears the unmistakable hallmark of Dub Spencer & Trance Hill, glowing with irresistible grooves, languorous depth, melodious beauty, and cool soundscapes. Far removed from purism, these tracks open the hatches in the dubby twilight and flood the horizon with breathtaking keyboards and silvery guitar solos. Live in Dub gets the masses moving their feet and nodding their heads, as the groove rumbles deeply on and on.

GIORDANI, MARCELLO: Respect Yourself CD (EF 010CD)
Endless Flight presents the debut album from Italian producer, DJ, and devoted record collector Marcello Giordani, featuring some older and some brand-new material. His premiere in the DJ booth was 1992, when he started to play house records in the clubs nearby his hometown parma. Later he held a residency at a party called "Les Folies de Pigalle" -- hailed as one of the best house nights in Italy around the mid-'90s. In 1994 he started to produce, but it took him 'til the middle of the last decade when his career embarked as a notorious record producer that skips between deep house, cosmic disco, and Italo. His tracks have been released on labels such as Dirt Crew's Players Paradise, Boogiefarm, Slow Motion Disco, Mule Musiq, and his own imprint Italo Deviance Records. In addition to his own productions, he has also gained international applause for super-sharp edits -- solo and as part of the duo Marvin & Guy. As if that weren't enough Marcello Giordani runs his own blog www.italodeviance.com -- a place in the infinite web space where he uploads thousands of long-forgotton curiosities out of the mostly Italian obscure disco, cosmic, and funk universe, as well as posts about his latest contemporary dance music favs. Beside blogging and making music in his small studio that is filled with analog vintage synths, he collects records like crazy. His collection contains more then 12,000 vinyls from disco, funk, boogie, and Italo to soul, cosmic, house, and jazz. As a forerunner of things to come, he released his first-class disco house EP Comin' Down on Endless Flight. This debut album swings between disco, boogie, and deep house -- 10 tracks full of charming samples, melodies to die for, and soft but demanding bass lines. There is a gentle '80s feel to many of them that sounds like a romantic future flashback. Sometimes his house gets moody and percussions fly around magic female vocal loops. His acid is soft, his chords are soul-stirring, piano melodies drift around, and at times, strings spread the emotion. If you ask Marcello Giordani if there is any icon with whom he would like to spend a night partying with he answers, "Ron Hardy." A good place to celebrate this special night would be the legendary club Muzic Box in Chicago, where Hardy developed house music.

WAREIKA HILL SOUNDS: No More War EP 10" (HJP 071EP)
Here are four new grounation furies from Wareika Hill Sounds -- hypnotic, thunderous, urgent, mystical -- with dubwise bass drums embedding the Light Of Saba veteran's gorgeous trombone classicism. The opener is a rocking kumina rhythm, with ring-the-alarm metal percussion and exhortatory brass; "Free the People" swirls some apocalyptic reasoning into the foggy, thumping mix. "Universe in Crisis" chuffs head-long down the grooves, before the anthemic "Chant" takes a step back from the fire, the expert drumming and lyrical bone-work in full effect.

GUERERRO, LALO: Los Chucos Suaves/Tequila 7" (JBJ 1042EP)
Lalo Guererro's "Los Chucos Suaves" is perhaps the definitive recording in the short-lived Los Angeles sub-genre of Pachuco music, the sounds which emanated from the Mexican youth sub-culture of the same name in the late 1940s. A hybrid of American jazz, pop, and Latin American rhythms, with songs sung in Spanish and dense in Chicano slang, the movement was an intriguing sub-plot in rock and roll history. On the flip is a terrific rendition of The Champs' "Tequila," sung in Spanish, with a loose, jazzy approach.

VA: Spiritual Jazz 4: Americans in Europe 3LP (JMAN 057LP)
Triple LP version. Housed in a deluxe triple gatefold sleeve with download card for the entire album. Jazzman Records presents the fourth volume in their Spiritual Jazz compilation series. It's well-known that throughout the 20th century, fed up with poor working conditions and racism in their home country, many American jazz musicians chose to leave the U.S. in order to live and work in Europe. What's less well-known is how their music developed and evolved during their time on the continent, and how the experience of being a musician in Europe was to shape their lives. Over the years, countless jazz concerts, festivals and recordings featuring American jazz musicians have taken place all over Europe, yet it's remarkable how few of these musical artifacts have been evaluated by the jazz community. Jazzman seeks to assess the European experiences of the American jazzman, with a specific focus on the progressive sounds of modal jazz and the avant garde. We examine the recordings made by those who crossed the Atlantic just to take in a short tour, as well as those who made more frequent trips, and of course, those for whom Europe ultimately became their permanent place of residence. Radical new jazz sounds were created as renowned ex-pat American jazzmen mingled with the crème de la crème of their European counterparts. Early developments in world music inspired by trans-global cultural excursions to Asia, Africa and beyond. Exchanges of ideas and a cultural meeting of minds happened as revolutionary jazz festivals took place behind the Iron Curtain. Advances in rhythm and sound where modal jazz and the prophetic music of John Coltrane merged with European folk traditions. This is Spiritual Jazz -- as played by Americans in Europe. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes. Artist include: Sahib Shihab & Pierre Cavalli, Johnny Hawksworth & Hampton Hawes, Clarence Peters, Sahib Shihab, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, Billy Gault, Frank Wright Sextet, Grachan Moncur III, Don Cherry & The New Eternal Rhythm, Lee Konitz, Noah Howard Group, Bobby Hutcherson/Harold Land Sextet, and Eric Dolphy.

DNA: DNA on DNA CD (NO 012CD)
2013 repress. New York's seminal no wave band, DNA, makes it's highly anticipated American CD debut with this definitive collection of studio and live recordings. Surviving two line-ups over a brief period of four years; this highly influential, strikingly original and extremely under-recorded band left a huge void in its wake. Formed in 1978, Brazilian-raised singer/guitarist Arto Lindsay hastily assembled an international trio of non-musicians. Robin Crutchfield played keyboard and Japan's Ikue Mori played drums. DNA played their first gig within weeks and recorded their first 7" shortly afterwards. The ear of Brian Eno was quickly caught, recording them for the infamous No New York compilation alongside James Chance, Mars, and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. Before No New York was released, Robin left the band after a total tenure of nine months. Bassist Tim Wright had just left Pere Ubu, relocated to NY and quickly joined DNA. With a new face, a new instrument, and a new sound, DNA recorded their classic 9-minute EP A Taste Of DNA. DNA toured the States and Europe, bringing their explosive live show to a wider audience. DNA only released 12 songs during its lifetime, and another 3 shortly afterwards on a European compilation. Their impact was far and wide-reaching. Many musicians have sited DNA as a main influence including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and the band Blonde Redhead, who appropriated their name from a DNA song title. This CD compiles all of the studio and many choice live recordings. Of particular interest are the original line-up's "early versions" of "Detached," "5:30" and "Low" (which is closely related to "A New Low"). The unreleased studio tracks "Grapefruit," "Police Chase" and "Young Teenagers Talk Sex" are heard here for the first time, as well as live versions of the unreleased songs "Nearing" and "Surrender." Exclusive liner notes from Byron Coley, Jason Gross and Glenn O'Brien pack the 16-page booklet alongside many unseen photos and flyers.

SPUNK: Das Wohltemperierte Spunk 6CD BOX (RCD 2140CD)
At one minute past 8:00PM on January 20th, 2001, the Norwegian quartet Spunk began playing a drone in the key of B, inaugurating a project that would weave into their musical lives for the foreseeable future. Eleven years, 11 months and 11 minutes later, the same foursome struck up a G, embarking on the final leg of a journey that had taken them through the 12 notes of the equal tempered scale -- one tone per year. Das Wohltemperierte Spunk's thrilling, texturally-complex improvisations can be appreciated in their own right without any knowledge of the underpinning structure or concept. And yet the underlying numerology places the piece in a long line of consciously mathematical music, from the Bach keyboard corpus from which it takes its name, to Anton Webern's "String Quartet Opus 28" (1938), which closes a circle by spelling out B-A-C-H in the first four notes of its 12-tone row. Spunk's own opus uses the same order of tones as the Webern quartet. The 12 concerts took place at a variety of unusual locations around Oslo, including the immense, almost pitch-black interior of the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum, with its 20-second reverberation time; the Nobel Institute; a cabin on a remote island in the Oslo fjord; in a tent on top of the slanting roof of the newly-built Opera House; the Physics Department of Oslo University; a vibrant high street shopping mall called Oslo City; and a private domestic living room. Hild Sofie Tafjord on the project: "It was unifying, focused and meditative, and it was room for our personalities to color and develop the ensemble sound. I think the core of Das Wohltemperierte Spunk is our love of being in that meditative flow together, playing that single pitch as a meeting point. Kristin Andersen (trumpet and flutes), Lene Grenager (cello), Maja Ratkje (voice, violin, harmonica, accordion, theremin and various), Hild Sofie Tafjord (French horn and various).

VA: Dabke - Sounds of the Syrian Houran CD (SHAM 002CD)
Dabke is the celebratory music and dance found throughout the Levantine Middle East. By the mid-1990s, a new wave of high-energy electronic dabke music had emerged -- to be heard at weddings, parties and cassette-stalls region-wide. New wave dabke was first introduced to Western ears by way of Omar Souleyman and his northeastern Syrian sounds. This collection presents a hypnotic and diverse selection of electrified dabke dance cuts from a region in the south of Syria known as the Houran. The Houran refers to a swathe of south Syria and northwestern Jordan, beginning just below Damascus, and encompassing the Syrian cities of Daraa, Suweida, Bosra and the Golan Heights. Its populations include Syrians, Bedouin, Druze, Palestinians and Jordanians -- and this unique confluence of cultures is evident throughout these tracks. Hourani dabke is relentless and commanding, driven by heavy rhythms and weaving synthesizers. Long passages of intense musical fervor are punctuated by fierce male vocals, belting out calls for the audience to dance, alongside the lyrical laments and tributes to love and lust. But the sound of the Houran is best defined by the mijwiz -- a double-reed bamboo flute famed for its droney overtones as well as shrill, buzzing melodic lines achieved by circular breathing techniques. Historically, Hourani dabke was played with mejwiz, hand percussion and narrative vocal chants. Electronic beats have inevitably embellished the contemporary sound, magnifying the intensity -- and the mijwiz players have taken their craft to the microphone, in order to maintain the instrument's prominence over the resulting volume. The sampled mijwiz sound has its own specific qualities and in recent years, can even be heard in combination with its organic counterpart. The recordings featured in this collection were captured live to the mixing desk during weddings and parties throughout the Houran during the 1990s and 2000s, and represent a mere sliver of the sounds found in tape and disc vendors throughout the region. Proceeds from this release will be donated to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (IFRC) to help support urgent humanitarian aid work during the ongoing crisis in Syria.

NITE HAWKS/SCOTT WOOD, THE: Chicken Grabber/Chicken Rock 7" (TTSHAKE 109EP)
TT Shaker ransacks the coop to pull out these two chicken-based oddities. On the top-side is the Nite Hawks (a very early incarnation of The Crusaders) with their slinky instrumental number "Chicken Grabber," a jazzy bump-and-grinder punctuated by frenzied clucking and deranged muttering, made infamous by its appearance in John Waters' Pink Flamingos -- surely one of the best songs about chicken ever made. On the flip-side is Scott Wood's "Chicken Rock" -- another rock & roll curio with a decidedly unhinged air.

WALKER, SCOTT: Scott 2 LP (4M 150LP)
2013 repress. "Originally released in 1968, Scott 2 made it all the way to number one on the UK pop charts, perhaps the strangest number one hit in pop history. Continuing with his orchestral obsession, Scott 2 features over-the-top string and horn arrangements, occasionally veering into dangerously schmaltzy territory. This production style is in drastic contrast to the lyrical content, songs of despair, prostitution, homosexuality, and brutal honesty, indicting the same glamorous and glitzy lifestyle that his baroque pop style emblemizes. Along with many originals, Scott 2 features songs by Jacques Brel, Tim Hardin, and Bacharach/David."

In fact, the only other songwriter that makes it onto the album is Walker's idol, Belgium's legendary singer/songwriter Jacques Brel. Scott 3 again features string heavy production courtesy of Wally Scott, though it occasionally moves out of pop ballad territory into a more cinematic feel influenced by Ennio Morricone, among others. "Fuchsia's 1971 LP is a lost gem of experimental British progressive rock (in the vein of Henry Cow and Comus). Fuchsia was formed by lead singer and guitarist Tony Durant during his days at Exeter University. Wanting to write songs outside of the standard pop format, Durant had the innovative idea of bringing in an all-female string section, which included fellow Exeter students, Madeleine Bland (cello), Janet Rogers (violin), and Vanessa Hall-Smith (viola). Fuchsia's self-titled first (and last) album was recorded in summer of 1971, and the band (all students) was determined to tour during their next holiday. His sensual work is championed by all in the know and still resonates quite frankly in these sexually exaggerated times. Building on the North American re-introduction to the maestro's work with 1971's masterpiece concept album Histoire de Melody Nelson, Light In The Attic Records is thrilled to announce their follow-up Gainsbourg reissue, 1969's Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg (often referred to as Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus). Recorded as a series of duets and solo performances with lover, actress, and model Birkin, the pair's chemistry-enhanced collaboration was thrust upon the record buying public to much shock and horror, but indeed found global success. The disc quickly shot its cigarette brandishing author and fresh-faced vocalist into the international spotlight; and although lead-off single 'Je T'aime' and its seductive purrs reached top slot in the UK charts, none other than the Pope branded the tune offensive and blasphemous. Ever the conversationalist, Gainsbourg wittily replied, 'we couldn't have gotten a better PR man!' Indeed Serge, indeed. VA: Groove Club Vol. 2: Cambodia Rock Spectacular! 2LP (LION 112LP)
2013 repress. "Recorded in raw, bare bones conditions, mostly live and with traditional Cambodian instruments finding their place alongside found keyboards or guitars, the music of the Khmer rock musicians transformed the nightlife of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh -- and many years later seduced countless listeners around the world with their groovy sound. The rise to power of the anti-Western, fanatical Khmer Rouge in 1975 caused drastic and permanent changes for Cambodia. These years saw social upheaval in the form of massive famines, selective executions and a brutal campaign of genocide responsible for the deaths of an estimated two million Cambodians, many in the notorious 'killing fields.' Even the most famous and beloved Khmer musicians could not escape. Sinn Sisamouth ('the Emperor of Khmer Music'), Ros Sereysothea ('The Golden Voice of the Royal Capital'), and Pan Ron met their deaths at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. The music of these honored musicians and others live on in this exclusive 2xLP edition, assembled with much love and respect for the artists who made the Khmer rock scene as thrilling as we find it to be. The music is wild and anarchic, rhythmic and undulating, sometimes sweet and lyrical, but always moving. Cambodia Rock Spectacular! captures that deep soulfulness ingrained in the best music; perhaps the most definitive collection of classic Cambodian rock music to appear on the scene to date." PAUL, ASHLEY: Line the Clouds LP (REL 020LP)
"Multi-faceted composer and performer Ashley Paul releases her new LP. A hyper-intuitive record, where off-kilter instrumentation meets beautifully crafted melodies to convey the very essence of 'musicality,' Line the Clouds contains 44.18 minutes of sonic paradoxes and dichotomies. Stirring up a zephyr of twelve blissfully cacophonous sounds -- singular moments of an indivisible whole -- the focus is on guitar, voice and saxophone, but Ashley also employs everything from flute, clarinet, guitar, bells, percussion and prepared strings in her melodic endeavours which simultaneously plugs in the ghost of American song. From 'Wide Expanse' -- where high-pitched reeds and whistles collide with richer tones and Ashley's fragile voice -- through the simple, sparkling beauty of the LP's title track -- with the guitar at the helm -- and the multi-vocal flutterings of 'Watch Them Pass,' there's also the freeing experimentalism and atonal clatter of 'Feb.21' -- a song which ably immortalises a feeling of stomach churning anguish -- and the album's gentle, abstract finale 'You're a Feeling.' This Brooklyn based artist is at the vanguard of the new wave of music currently rippling through the city where opposing strains of style and sound work in unison. Line the Clouds will be available in a limited edition LP available on colored vinyl in a custom sealed package with screen printed wraparound of Ashley's animal drawings, in addition to a digital version."

Three of the five tracks feature lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr., sung by Lincoln, who is joined on 'All Africa' by Nigerian conga player Michael Olatunji. Veteran tenor saxophone legend Coleman Hawkins makes a powerful statement in 'Driva' Man,' which also features stirring solos from trumpeter Booker Little, trombonist Julian Priester, and tenor saxophonist Walter Benton. The ensemble's focus is razor sharp throughout, honed by Roach's virtuosic drumming, and Abbey Lincoln's screams during her husband's drum solo in 'Triptych: Prayer / Protest / Peace' will send chills down your spine. One of the all-time 'free jazz' classics finally available again." On 180 gram vinyl.

ABDUL-MALIK, AHMED: Jazz Sahara LP (OUT 5002LP)
"Decades before the advent of 'world music', bassist-composer Ahmed Abdul-Malik introduced Arabic music into jazz, creating a distinct, unique sound that was far beyond its time. Best known in jazz circles for his solid work with Randy Weston and Thelonious Monk, Abdul-Malik, who is of Sudanese descent, was also the first to use the oud, a pear-shaped, traditional Middle Eastern stringed instrument similar to a lute, as a jazz instrument. Recorded in 1958, with tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (his bandmate in the Monk quartet), and originally out on the Riverside label, Abdul-Malik's debut solo album Jazz Sahara was a burning fusion of Middle East and West." THORS HAMMER (GERMANY):

THORS HAMMER: Thors Hammer LP (THLP 001LP)
"Thors Hammer came from Copenhagen, the Danish capital. Their music was a jazzy progressive rock with English lyrics. Their one and only LP was released in 1971 and holds the sad record of being the most bootlegged LP in Denmark. Until now it can be found as CD editions on four illegal labels (Walhalla, Crystal Emporium Productions, Won-Sin, and Second Life Records), and as an illegal LP reprint (on Phantastic Plastic Records). All these editions were made up very poorly. The now first legal vinyl re-issue is accompanied by a four-page insert in LP size, containing a detailed band history in German, English and Danish language, a comprehensive discography including side and solo projects, cover and label reproductions, and band photographs. It is pressed on 180g vinyl and limited to 1000 numbered copies. It is the very first LP release of Garden of Delights' sublabel Thors Hammer which, to honour this great band, was named after it. This label is destined for bands coming from outside the German-speaking countries."

They could immediately sign a contract with the Island label. On Friday, 23rd October 1970, they had a gig at the third Essen Pop & Blues festival in the Gruga Hall. The concert was then recorded semi-professionally by the host. Now, the tapes have been elaborately re-mastered by Fotheringay guitarist Jerry Donahue who got the most out of the sound that was technically possible. GALE, EDDIE: Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music CD (WATER 117CD)
2013 repress. "Having developed his skills amongst the cream of New York's hard bop players (jamming with John Coltrane and Jackie McLean), Eddie Gale helped ring in jazz's controversial new thing during the 1960s and 1970s on a series of influential releases. His inspired trumpet playing graced Cecil Taylor's Unit Structures, Larry Young's Of Peace And Love and a series of recordings and performances with Sun Ra's Arkestra. He also cut a pair of under-acknowledged soul-jazz influenced albums as a leader for Blue Note at the end of the '60s. The first Eddie Gale Blue Note LP Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music was released in 1968, produced by Blue Note founder Francis Wolff. A blend of funky grooves, a gospel street choir of singers, and late 60's free form freak outs. Recommended for fans of Sun Ra & Brother Ah, Coltrane's Love Supreme, and Max Roach's It's Time. The original vinyl LPs go for big bucks on Ebay, this is the first time this Blue Note album has ever been reissued. Remastered from the original master tapes. Original artwork."

The world has been waiting for this album -- DJ Koze offers a long-awaited return with this astonishing, mind-blowing album. Amygdala is Koze's Sgt. Pepper's. It's an unreal 78-minute walk through Koze's mind, complete with moods, intensities, sounds and scenes as yet unheard of. It feels more like a double album, urging you to turn over and change the records time and time again. Amygdala amazes with its sheer musicality, deepness and its ethereal sound design. Nobody else could unite artists like Caribou and Dirk von Lotzow, Hildegard Knef and Matthew Dear, Ada and Milosh in such an organic way and on one and the same record as Koze did. There's never been anything like it. In the true style of Kosi Kos, its all about the courage to dare, about letting voices resonate undisguised in all their authentic peculiarity. About creating truthfulness. How much can you cut out, when does the flame die down? On the other hand, under which circumstances could it even burn for ever?

"With CD2, we challenged some artists from our label and asked them to make something totally different from what they usually do -- Eats Everything's 'Need' is a perfect example." The Pets house aesthetic flits characteristically through garage, harder bass atmospherics, techno and old school influences throughout the first CD, with A1 Bassline's "Trip Over," Breach & T. SPRINGINTGUT: Where We Need No Map LP (PING 037LP)
LP version. Andi Otto alias Springintgut presents his third album, Where We Need No Map. Since his last record, Otto has invented a new instrument. His "fello" is a cello with movement sensors attached to the bow with corresponding software. The development has already been tested at STEIM in Amsterdam in 2007. Since then, Otto has achieved vital refinements of the system, cooperated with artists in various fields as diverse as choreographers in Macedonia, theater in Nigeria, and techno DJs in the Berghain Kantine in Berlin and at the Fusion Festival. He has even played the instrument solo on different continents. For this album, Otto takes the fello to his studio in Hamburg for the first time. He records his instrument which has until today only been presented live on stage. In these fello sessions, the bow gestures immediately modulate and process the amplified cello sound. In the subsequent edits, he selects and cuts these sessions and merges them with other styles, such as skweee, house, and jazz. Springintgut's trademark sound, this unique playfulness, is present throughout, while the live-processed cello adds an unrivaled deepness. The artist's expeditions even add more color. Two tracks have been recorded in India. The lead voice on "Bangalore Kids" is a field recording of a schoolboy in Cubbon Park, Bangalore. Andi Otto spent three months in Japan as an artist-in-residence in the Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto. During this period, he produced the more contemplative tracks on the album, like "Kamogawa Cycling" and "Western Kyoto." In Sri Lanka he met Sasha Perera, the voice of Berlin's dub-techno band Jahcoozi, and they recorded two songs together. Especially on "Bullet," one can sense the lazy, muggy, peaceful heat of the afternoons in which this beautiful track has been composed. These stories may help to locate the music's origins but still the sound of Where We Need No Map points us to unknown territories. Includes download code.

KAVINSKY: Teddy Boy EP 12" (REC 024EP)
2013 repress, originally released in 2005. Kavinsky's "Testarossa Autodrive" could be easily described as "heroic house" -- a fierce, edgy, powerful track that is getting the remix treatment from Mr. Oizo. Once again, expect the unexpected, but you can dance to it. To complete the package, find a remix from Detroit-based Arpanet (aka Dopplereffect). "Arpanet Nightdrive" is a must for true electro lovers.

EMPTYSET: Material 12" (SUB 007EP)
These recordings further the work Emptyset, developed through the release Medium, exploring the relationship between space and the fundamental properties of sound, applying extreme bass, noise and feedback as means of extracting the essence and sonic signature. Across the recordings there is a focus on the nature of sonic decay, as each space imparts its signature reverberant characteristics to the signal, ranging from detailed noise reflecting across sheer concrete surfaces to low frequency sonics tunneling through subterranean earth. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

FLAVA D: Hold On/Home 12" (BRO 012EP)
"Hold On" is a spacious but melodic garage-banger made popular via Flava D's appearance on the Boiler Room. Across six minutes, she bridges the gap between grime and garage in a similar vein to Royal-T's remix of TRC's "Oo Aa Ee" in 2011. "Home" has been worked by the Rinse FM and 1xtra DJs, and is a punchier 4x4 effort designed for peak-time club action. This Red Bull Music Academy graduate clearly has a bright future ahead.

KRYSTAL KLEAR: Addiction (feat. Jenna G) 12" (RINSE 022EP)
Dublin-born and Manchester-based Krystal Klear presents his Addiction EP on Rinse. The title-track is a funky slice of modern boogie driven by a fat analog bass line and swirling strings, all capped off with a towering vocal performance from Jenna G. It is joined by an extended instrumental edit that blasts the original into deep space. "No Sweat," meanwhile, is a slinkier and more romantic companion to the bombast of the title-track, with chimes and synthetic strings picking out woozy melodies above a strutting bass line.

TECTONIC (UK):

DARK SKY: Confunktion/Double U 12" (TEC 069EP)
Tectonic welcomes Dark Sky to the fold with two killer tracks. "Confunktion" builds from a background of subtle atmospherics, rising slowly before eventually leaping out, ambush-style. Sculptured tech-bass sounds carve their way through the 130 bpm, 4/4 rhythmic backbone, building and dropping down before re-emerging again fuller, with emotive charge. "Double U" takes a more playful stance with rhythmic builds and mischievous intent -- bleeping, popping like a bongo drum full of electronic popping-corn. Pounding sub bass pulls everything together.

'Bring Back The Sound (Funtcase Rmx) / Make It Rain (Genetix Rmx) 12"
Dubstep
PASA066           (Passenger)       $⑦      6th May
Listen:                  http://soundcloud.com/passenger-records/sets/bring-the-ruckus-remixes/
A pure slab of noise... a ruckus on vinyl! A limited edition piece of wax featuring remixes by the Circus Records superstars Funtcase & Genetix.
Funtcase has been producing since being inspired by d&b as a kid growing up in Bournemouth. In 2009 he created his dubstep alias Funtcase and released his first single on 4:20 Records. The following year he signed with Circus Records and released the killa ‘So Vexxed/Matress Punch’. He is also known for his standout remixes, including mixes for Plan B, Camo & Krooked, The Wideboys & Skizm.
For this remix Passenger organised Spyda (Pendulum ‘Black Tarantula’/Knife Party ‘Fire Hive’) back into the vocal booth to lay down some fresh vocals for the remix. A former Passenger vinyl buyer, Funtcase is no stranger to the sounds of the label and adds his own nod to its history by flipping some breakbeat twists and turns to proceedings to create what many are saying is his best remix to date!
The flipside remix is from fellow Circus Records crew members and Bournemouth badmen Genetix. Following a similar path to Funtcase, Matt & Rich started off making d&b before switching the tempo and laying down some filth at 140. With regular appearances on  the MistaJam’s radio show, guest mixes on KissFm for Hatcha and Crazy D and remixes for the likes of Bassline Smith & Drumsound and Kelly Clarkson, to name a few, these guys are continuing a south coast tradition of bass noise and terror.
With the label instructions to ‘make it as heavy as you can, Genetix took the vocal of Sporty-O, recorded at DJ Lethal’s (House Of Pain/Limp Biskit/La Coka Nostra) studio in LA back in 2007, and brought it up to speed with a track that flips from militant dubstep into some proper 808 trap biz.

*Having teased us with a free download in recent weeks it’s time to present the real deal, the first official single taken from the brand new album from the unstoppable, wholly original, Alix Perez. Having laid his foundations firmly within drum & bass over the past eight years it was his debut LP back in 2009 that set a precedent for his musical ambition, being one of the first producers to really embrace the crossing of the genres; ‘1984’ astounded critics and fans the world over, gaining accolades across the board from the likes of Mixmag and DJ Mag through to the Metro newspaper and Q Magazine. Now as we get ready for the next chapter, ‘Annie’s Song’ serves as the ultimate prelude to the main event, a thoroughbred electronic masterpiece.
Hard to pigeon-hole, ‘Annie’s Song’ is a sublime slice of bright-eyed electro R&B featuring the stirring vocals of Sam Wills and some of the most sparkling production to have ever come out of the Perez studio. Plucked strings, affected vocals and fuzzy synths all melt together over a thick half-time break for a full-on future soul excursion perfect for those warmer springtime days ahead.
The vinyl version leads with the jungle remix from Hospital Records’ Brazilian tour de force, S.P.Y. As he ups the BPM’s back into drum & bass territories we’re treated to dirty percussive amen workout underpinned by a huge sub b-line and that all important Sam Wills vocal, offering a little refrain from the dance floor demolition in progress.
We’re then treated to another slice of the album with Alix himself back in D&B mode for ‘We Could Have Been’ featuring D.Ablo; a house infused piece of liquid drum & bass, full of twinkling pianos and deep, deep vibes to keep the faithful happy.

Always daring to be different Sgn:Ltd offer up another release that pushes the boundaries of bass once more in a stealth move from London based Xtrah, an artist who’s been steadily climbing the ladder with a string of successes on labels such as Critical, Subtitles and Symmetry amongst others. Without doubt one of the finest talents in modern day D&B.
• ‘Shock Treatment’ is a mean juggernaut of a tune with a very bad attitude to match. One for the Shogun soldiers, this has been throwing down at warehouse events over the past 6 months with devastating effect, full of drifting mentasm stabs, crunching breaks and a war mongering bassline to abuse the hell out of you! One to test your sound system with.
Rolling on and ‘Going Deeper’ does just that with an eerie intro of warped fx and percussion before the sickest drop into a vintage Metalheadz flex of spine-snapping breaks and heavily edited kicks, matched only by an absolute monster of a bassline. Definitely Xtrah at his darkest, this is yet another gold seal release on what’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting labels out there.
