Through the Window is the new album by Prurient, his first for Blackest Ever Black. It is, in a sense, both the conclusion and the climax of the journey that Dominick Fernow began with 2011's Many Jewels Surround the Crown 7" and continued with that year's Bermuda Drain LP and Time's Arrow EP. It was recorded before the Hospital Productions founder's move to Los Angeles, but in tone, subject matter, and scale it firmly anticipates his current stint navigating the desert city's "hall of mirrors, sycophants, fair-weather friends and social vampires." The three pieces featured on Through the Window, including the 18-minute title-track, also represent the ultimate expression of Fernow's affection for European techno forms, and his ability to apply them to his own uniquely lacerating purpose. Unlike his claustrophobic, inward-looking recordings as Vatican Shadow, this material is widescreen, open, expansive. Nonetheless, the goal is exorcism and self-knowledge, not ecstasy. Through the Window is, at bottom, a work of true SM electronics. Music to listen to at night, in the hills, watching as headlights approach.

LP version. Features additional Victor Rice remixes of Live in Dub not on the CD. Limited to 999 copies. Dub Spencer & Trance Hill are back with a bang and in their favorite place: on stage. This is a blast of sheer live energy that slips down as nicely as Jamaican honey. The tracks on this album were recorded at various concerts in 2012. Each track is so catchy, you'll struggle to stop humming it. It pulses in your stomach, it breathes under your skin and it glitters in your ears. The Swiss musicians have worked with the Hamburg-based dub label Echo Beach since 2006, and to date the collaboration has produced five albums. Another equally prominent protagonist on this project is the Munich sound and dub specialist Umberto Echo, who for the past two years has regularly accompanied the band on tour and who also performs on the mixing desk as a fifth instrumentalist. Umberto Echo recorded and produced the tracks on this album, magnifying Dub Spencer & Trance Hill's space. The nine live tracks are supplemented by six remixes by the acclaimed dub technician Victor Rice. The New York-born artist, who played bass for The Scofflaws Ska, has lived in São Paulo since 2002. Here, in 2004, he recorded his debut album In America, which explores and refines dub techniques. Unlike the old school pioneersKing Tubby or Augustus Pablo, the influence of ska is very noticeable in his remixes. Live in Dub bears the unmistakable hallmark of Dub Spencer & Trance Hill, glowing with irresistible grooves, languorous depth, melodious beauty, and cool soundscapes. It's only logical that he reactivates his beloved Main project. As we all know, Main laid the foundations during the 1990s for much of the love of abstract guitar treatments in electronic music throughout the 2000s. Hampson has teamed up with Stephan Mathieu to create a stunning new album. On Ablation, Mathieu adds extra tonal color and an obscure rhythmic palette to Hampson's exacting treatments and detailed use of layered concrète sounds to create an emotionally-charged and fascinating work. Old fans of Main will not be disappointed, and neither will new followers of experimental audio. Packaged with images byGrebo Gray with layout by Dave Coppenhall, and expertly mastered and cut by Rashad Becker, Ablation is a highlight for the spring 2013 season. IELASI & KASSEL JAEGER, GIUSEPPE: Parallel/Grayscale LP (EMEGO 161LP)
Parallel/Grayscale is the first collaborative work between Italian guitarist and composer Giuseppe Ielasi and French-Swiss composer and electroacoustic musician Kassel Jaeger. It is comprised of two different improvisation sessions. The first one took place in Paris, in October of 2011. The second happened in Oreno, in June of 2012, after the first concert Ielasi and Jaeger performed together. The first session was a pure analog device improvisation, whereas the second one was more laptop-oriented. These two moments have been melted together, forming two different subtracts of the same material. Gratitude to Fabio Carboniand Sara Serighelli from O', Milano.

LOCUST: You'll Be Safe Forever LP (EMEGO 162LP)
LP version. You'll Be Safe Forever marks the first release from Locustin 12 years. Mark Van Hoen, who made a string of influential releases as Locust on R&S records in the 1990s, all but retired the alias at the end of that decade. In May 2012, Van Hoen was invited to perform a live set on WFMU radio. In order to make the set more spontaneous and add a further dimension, he asked friend and fellow musician Louis Sherman to collaborate. While improvising new material in Sherman's Brooklyn rehearsal studio, it swiftly became obvious that the material sounded like Locust. Inspired by joint explorations with found sound sources and ambient textures, and sharing a pan-dimensional immersion in the length and breadth of analog and digital recording, the duo performed a series of tracks live. This material, combined with previously-recorded tape tracks dating back to 2006 form the bulk of the album. The melancholic depths of electronic music explored in those improvisations, expanded further through subsequent sessions at Van Hoen's Woodstock, NY studio, have resulted in this latest entry in Locust's impressive discography. The record showcases prime examples of Van Hoen's compulsively hypnotic beats and abstracted pop vocals -- already hallmarks of his collected work since 1993 -- manipulating a global variety of samples in Celemony's Melodyne software to weave a unique sonic tapestry, as inviting as it is intricate. Paired with Sherman's evocative synth improvisations -- an immediately visceral element new to Locust -- these collaborators have crafted a shattered landscape that bridges two perspectives of progressive movement in electronic music under a single name. Sherman, an American from Baltimore, comes to the band armed with a vast knowledge of the history of electronic music. This, combined with Londoner Mark Van Hoen's known musical pedigree, maps the complete topography of a landscape -- its shadow and light, depth and height, mesmerizing complexity and ethereal simplicity -- with a break-beating heart and alchemical ear.

HAYNES, JIM: The Wires Cracked LP (EMEGO 171LP)
The recordings for The Wires Cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in October of 2012. I had mentioned in discussing a previous album's construction that I prefer to forget how I build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. This is so that I don't get to precious with them, so that I could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. With the album being relatively fresh in my mind, I can still recall various components to "The Wires Cracked" -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory operated by Stanford University, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of Günter Schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. That's probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. Describing his work through the pithy phrase "I rust things," Jim Haynes is an artist who has developed a vocabulary of decay that he has applied to photography, video, installation, and sound. Haynes' sound work draws from shortwave radio static, electric field disturbances, controlled feedback manipulation, and numerous textural scrapings, manifesting broken minimalism of magnetic drones and volatile tactility. This engineering of disparate materials and media seeks to evince the unpredictability of decay, to manifest its potential for a rough hewn beauty, and to bare witness to its inevitability. He has exhibited internationally at Electric Works (San Francisco), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , the Bekerley Art Museum, The Exploratorium (SanFrancisco), WestSpace (Melbourne, Australia), Jack Straw Productions (Seattle), Eyedrum (Atlanta), Diapason (New York), and The Lab (San Francisco). Haynes has published his work through the Helen Scarsdale Agency, 23five Incorporated, Intransitive, Observatoire, and ElevatorBath. He has collaborated with Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound), M.S. Waldron (irr. app.(ext.)), Keith Evans, Allison Holt, and Loren Chasse. Haynes is one of the directors for 23five Incorporated and is the sole occupant at the Helen Scarsdale Agency.

ATHANOR: Flashback LP (GUESS 110LP)
Chicago, early '70s. Greg Herriges is obsessed with Lennon, 12-string guitars, and far-out psychedelic sounds. Rick Vittenson is a Beach Boys-Hollies-Who fanatic who writes for Crawdaddy! magazine. Both had previously played in several garage college bands during the '60s. Combining their mutual love for '60s music, Athanor was born. With the help of top studio musicians, they recorded and self-released three 45s between 1973 and 1975 (the first one produced by Mark Breyer, with whom Rick had played in pre-Skooshny band Brevity) which are now highly sought-after by fans of obscure psychedelic pop. All of them are featured here in stellar sound taken from the master tapes along with previously-unreleased studio tracks and superb-sounding home demos (1973-1981), plus a new song recorded in 2006 in the same vein as their vintage recordings. Morr Music reissues the legendary first album by the solo project ofJames McNew (Yo La Tengo) from 1993. "Some people complain that friends today are made with mouse-clicks. As if it was more personal in the '90s. James McNew, for example, became a good friend of mine in 1994. Never mind I hadn't even talked to the guy -- hell, he coveredJandek AND Silver Apples. We had so much in common! James McNew is a fan boy. If the name-drop list ranging from Albert Ayler toYoung Marble Giants included with his first 45 didn't tell you that, the blazing in his eyes when a name like The Shaggs was uttered, certainly did. Yet McNew is not obsessed with obscurity but with music. When his debut album Superpowerless appeared in 1993, the choice of covers ranged from Sun Ra to that tune Audrey Hepburn serenaded to millions of movie watchers, "Moon River." While McNew's high, sexy voice might be "superpowerless," his ears certainly are not. It's been the intimate sound of a 4-track recorder that tied these different angles of his eclectic taste together. Yes, Dump was part of the lo-fi generation. Nothing makes that clearer than the bonus tracks on his follow-up albumI Can Hear Music. Recorded during the infamous Dutch Fast Forward Festival in 1994 in -- naturally -- a living room, it contains all that was great about the few short moons of tape-hiss: collaborations triggered not even remotely by virtuosity (had Chris Knox ever played trumpet before that afternoon?); cardboard boxes as bass-drums; the victory of enthusiasm over perfection (have Half-Japanese been covered with more empathy?). The only thing that wasn't quite right about these first two Dump albums, was the format. But as justice doesn't know age, it's good to see these CDs finally being pressed on vinyl! They deserve it. The law deals with restrictions concerning the sale of sex and businesses of similar type. Due to the ambiguous way of reading it, the law also deals with nightclubs and related establishments that allow customers to dance. Especially in the last two years, clubs all over Japan have suffered under the authorities who often strictly enforce a 1 AM curfew deducted from an archaic adult entertainment law. LYRES: A Promise Is a Promise CD (MR 327CD)
Munster reissues the third Lyres LP, originally released on Ace of Hearts, from 1988. "Anyone following the career of Lyres for any length of time throughout that mid-to-late '80s period would doubtless be interested in the ongoing personnel shuffles that were taking place around this time. 'What really happened,' Jeff Conolly explains, 'is that we had to totally re-group the line-up with each LP because people instantly discovered that it was nearly impossible to go professional and maintain a living and do the kind of not-sell-out music we did at the same time. Our special Murphy drummer would leave and then re-join many, many times, and then we started getting robbed on tour a lot, and many nice things were lost to us... After the tour van got busted into in Amsterdam in May 1987 we had to get a new guitar guy to go along with our new rhythm section. At this point there was very little 'connection' with the original concept or sound of the 1979 group which had been founded on being aspiring amateur musicians.' Although one or two of USA's then modern garage-type bands were beginning to make some inroads beyond a cult-only success, particularly overseas, it was nearly always accepted as a given that playing this type of unfashionable music could only ever result in rather limited dividends, commercially speaking. But successful or otherwise, Lyres can be seen as purveyors of a rich stream of powerful music, distilled from an amalgam of influences, injected with unusual verve and vitality, and presented in a wholly authentic, provocatively different way from all other groups. Of the many startling 'Conolloid' creations, self-penned, or imaginatively reinvestigated, one wonders often how Lyres came up with such radical reinterpretations of songs such as Dave Dee and company's life-affirming piano ballad 'Here's a Heart.' 'I started buying original UK freakbeat records beginning in the early 1980s when they were still relatively affordable,' states Conolly. 'I liked that weirdo USA FontanaDave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich LP that had a ton of their hits on it, and I finally realized that their recording of 'Here's a Heart' had the special charming majick. On one of our trips to Paris I crashed withCarolyn and Stiv [Bators -- ex of U.S. punks The Dead Boys] and we discovered that we were both nuts about 'Here's a Heart.' I had bought myself a nice and reasonable DDDBM&T EP souvenir that afternoon at USA Records and we played it at Carolyn's and me and Stiv sang with it a lot. We kinda agreed to record it in one way or another, and later in January 1988 Stiv was in NYC and he came down to sing it with me live for the album #3.' With any kind of success, whether musical or otherwise, there also comes with it a certain degree of pressure, and so it was no different for Conolly and Lyres. 'All of a sudden I had to figure out a 'new' kind of Lyres sound and matching style/material to go with it,' says Conolly. BOHMAN, ADAM: Music and Words CD (PD 009CD)
2013 repress, originally released in 1999. When did you last hear a laugh-out-loud avant garde album? Paradigm Discs is hard-pressed to think of any. Roland Topor's Panic is a goodie, or some of the antics of the Selten Gehörte Musik gang, but this is funnier, and the label's own personal favorite Paradigm release. Bohman's personal approach to music has always shown a preference for the raw and unprocessed, although his three releases on Paradigm with Morphogenesis often use signal processing. On his first solo recording for Paradigm all the played music (except for one piece that uses slowed down and backwards sounds), consist of unprocessed sounds from the surfaces of a wide variety of objects that utilize a broken violin at its core. This CD attempts to cover the full variety of his different working practices which have been slowly evolving since the mid-'80s. In particular there is a total of over 30 minutes taken from one of his many "talking tapes," previously only heard by the few as audio letters, and much treasured by their recipients (there is also an example featured on the first London compilation on Paradigm Discs). These tapes consist of on-the-spot lo-fi cassette recordings of his observations, both humorous, mundane and personal. Special attention is given to colors, signage and vernacular architectural detail, and favored locations include: overseas visits, public toilets, restaurants and public transport, but it is the unpretentious wit and dedication that make these tapes so enduring. The sounds of the environment, the faulty recording mechanism and the frequent use of the pause button give these pieces an almost concrète, sound text feel. This "talking tape" dates from Christmas, 1994. There are also three "pause pieces" dating from 1990, which are multi-tracked, rapid collages of pre-recorded sound material, also recorded on cassette recorders. This uses a similar technique (although independently developed), as that used by Anton Bruhin on his InOut CD on Alga Marghen. Finally there are four multi-tracked studio recordings, and one live concert recording. Crucial to all these pieces is the element of improvisation. Bohman has collaborated with a diverse cross-section of improvisers, from Lol Coxhill to Joseph Hammer, and is one-half of the ongoing theater/improv duo The Bohman Brothers.

A strictly limited edition of 500 copies. Christian Fennesz is an Austrian electronic musician active since the late '90s and influenced by artists like Fripp and Eno and guitar-synth pioneer, Chuck Hammer. Fennesz uses guitar and laptops to created "multilayered compositions that blend melody and conventional musical instruments with harsh, irregular glitch-influenced sounds and washes of white noise." Over the years, Fennesz has played and collaborated with a number of artists, including Mike Patton, Jim O'Rourke, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg, Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse), and David Sylvian. In 2012 Fennesz also wrote the original soundtrack to the independent Austrian film, Aun, directed by Edgar Honetschläger, and based on the writings of Claude Levi-Strauss. On this double LP Fennesz can be heard performing in front of a live audience at the beautiful Marino Marini Museum (located in a medieval church) in Florence, Italy in February of 2012. If Satyajit Eye (originally released in 1993, reissued by Staalplaat) only blinks at Indian culture, the album Al Jar Zia Audio stares at it with both eyes wide open. It is known that Jones looked further than the Palestinian conflict, and also borrowed extensively from the rhythms of India, Pakistan, and other Eastern cultures. Like crossing borders in the bigger Islamic region, Jones takes whatever comes to hand, and moulds it into his own trademark sound -- often imitated, never surpassed. The tribal bang of the drums, the sampled voices of the radio, combined with a strong sense of melody, makes the music of Muslimgauze stand out a mile from the rest. Whereas others fell into the traps of commercialism, Muslimgauze remained faithful to his own principals and methods. Even in digging through the vaults of his recordings, it's hard to find material that is of a weaker nature -- as Al Jar Zia Audio will prove. There is the uplifting dance rhythms of "We Have Shafika Habibi On Our Bus" (which incorporates the chirping of crickets), the bubble-bass of "Arvinada Jewel Box," and the endless crackles of sunburned vinyl; but there are also curiosity pieces such as the highly experimental "All I Have Is Sand," and the "stop-start" approach of "Brotherhood of Tikrit." Bryn Jones was not just a master who refined the art of sampling, he also knew how to create a fine piece of music out of it, and more often then not displayed a very strong sense of melody. Al Jar Zia Audio offers 15 tracks in over an hour of exciting Muslimgauze music, and is of a rather varied nature. Less mysterious, more open -- this is the melting pot of many cultures from sunnier parts of the world, but all served up from a rainy UK city.

MUSLIMGAUZE: Satyajit Eye CD (ARCHIVE 011CD)
It has been said that if we mere mortals attempted to write down everything that Mozart ever composed, it would take us 80 years to do so -- but Mozart himself only lived to be 35. Something similar could be said, too, about the work of Bryn Jones - also known as Muslimgauze. Jones died in 1999, at the age of 38 -- but produced an incredible body of work, much of which remains unreleased. From the ultra-creative period that brought us Hamas Arc (1993) and Vote Hezbollah (1993) -- and also the lost album Shekel of Israeli Occupation (the master of which was returned to Jones -- who regarded the peace treaty signed in 1993 by the PLO, the original dedicatees of the album, as a betrayal -- and the music was subsequently erased) -- were the first signs that Jones had a wealth of unreleased material -- so much so, in fact, that Staalplaat decided to give fans a "free" release in exchange for sacrificing a part of the cover of Hamas Arc: if you cut out the insert from the CD cover and sent it in with a blank DAT, you'd eventually have your DAT sent back to you, but now as a free six-song DAT-only release (the severed part of the Hamas Arc cover would become the j-card cover for this new release - named Satyajit Eye -- and please note that xeroxed copies of the original CD inlay were not accepted...) Hamas Arc turned out to be one of the most successful releases from Muslimgauze, and endless amounts of these DATs have been copied. The DAT consisted of three original pieces, and three remixes from Vote Hezbollah; but there were also three pieces that were on the original master which, for reasons we may never know, were not used on the final release. Unsurprisingly enough, Satyajit Eye was eventually bootlegged -- but not until this year. This expanded version, however, completes the whole picture of this album -- showing us the first signs of Jones looking towards Indian music for inspiration; but also with breezy, desert-like rhythms and sounds (such as the intense "Zion Poison" -- which reminds us of O Yuki Conjugate), or the way-out music of the title-track. Satyajit Eye is a mysterious album, full of hidden layers; and evokes a lonely yet warm feeling of sun-covered sand dunes.

Jan Jelinek, Hanno Leichtmann and Andrew Pekler have formed a trio that can truly be called a supergroup. As solo artists, all three members are among the most renowned of Berlin's electronic musicians. When playing together as Groupshow, the three instrumentalists -- themselves largely informed by minimalist sensibilities -- engage with the idiom of free-form collective improvisation, which has a long tradition in Germany dating back to the days of Fluxus and Krautrock. Consequentially, the individual members' roles are not entirely fixed. Jelinek uses a sampler, effects and a mixer. Leichtmann plays drums, cymbals and synthetic drum pads. Pekler manipulates a tabletop guitar, synthesizer and effects pedals. The results are at once radical, otherworldly and intensely hypnotic. Groupshow performances do not recreate previously rehearsed or recorded music; instead, they attempt to make an open-ended aesthetic process both audible and tangible. Wherever possible, Groupshow position themselves and their equipment in the middle of the performance space, avoiding the use of a stage, risers or any kind of spatial separation between performer and audience. The lighting remains static and clinical throughout the performance while real-time video, filming from directly above the musicians and projected onto a wall or screen, shows the three members playing and manipulating their tangled pile of equipment. Whenever possible, Groupshow begin playing before any audience members enter, thus deliberately avoiding the dramaturgical imperative of an opening from which the rest of the musical narrative is expected to unfold. As the intensity of the music and degree of the audience's attention are both subject to flux, Groupshow set no time limit to their performances and members of the audience are free to come and go, engage and disengage with the music as they please. Live At Skymall was recorded live in Berlin and Lisbon in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

In collaboration with Danish ensemble Scenatet, Jacob Kirkegaard's two pieces "Labyrinthitis" and "Church" are here interpreted by classical instruments. The intention of this transformation into an instrumental score is to explore the musical dimension and potential of the sounds that were used in creating the original works. "Church" from 4 Rooms(TONE 026CD) originally consists of ambient recordings of an abandoned church inside the radioactive zone in Chernobyl. "Labyrinthitis" from Labyrinthitis (TONE 035CD) is a canon of oto-acoustic tones generated by the artist's own ears. Like most of Kirkegaard's sound works, both pieces are characterized by a strong focus on methodology, and by the artist's wish to omit any deliberate emotional or "musical" intention. Jacob Kirkegaard is a Danish artist focusing on scientific and aesthetic aspects of resonance, time, sound and hearing. His installations, compositions and performances deal with acoustic spaces or phenomena that usually remain imperceptible. Using unorthodox methods for recording, Kirkegaard captures and contextualizes hitherto unheard sounds from within a variety of environments: a geyser, a sand dune, a nuclear power plant, an empty room, a TV tower, and even sounds from the human inner ear itself. Based in Berlin, Kirkegaard is a graduate of the Academy for Media Arts in Cologne, Germany. Since 1995, Kirkegaard has presented his works at exhibitions and at festivals and conferences throughout the world. He has released five albums (mostly on the British label Touch) and is a member of the sound art collective freq_out.

"Bedlam and it's earlier incarnations (Ideal Milk, Big Bertha, etc.) were a hotbed for launching the career of superstar drummer Cozy Powell (RIP), who later played with such major Hard Rock acts as Whitesnake, Rainbow, and Black Sabbath. In this earlier stage, we can hear the fantastic guitar playing of Dave Ball very influenced by Cream/Clapton, his brother Denny on bass and Cozy on drums. In fact this early incarnation of Bedlam called Ideal Milk was almost a tribute to Cream. Moving on later, singer Ace Kefford enters the picture for a short stint with the band where they change the band name to Ace Kefford Stand. Ace was the ex-bass player of the Move. The B-side of the record has the Big Bertha demos which had different singers including Denny Ball which also sang on Ideal Milk. The style is still similar to Cream/Jeff Beck Group, sometimes with an heavier edge predicting what was going to come after 2 years (meanwhile Cozy was with The Jeff Beck Group and Dave Ball joined Procol Harum). Reissue limited to 400 copies with insert that includes detailed song liner notes written by Denny Ball and rare pics. Remastered from the master tapes for best sound quality possible."

"Dur-Dur Band emerged in the 1980s, during a time when Somalia's contribution to the creative culture in the Horn of Africa was visible and abundant. Seeking inspiration outside the impressive array of Somali traditional music that was encouraged at the time, everyone from Michael Jackson and Phil Collins to Bob Marley and Santana were fair game. This recording, which was remastered from a cassette copy source, is a document of Dur-Dur Band after establishing itself as one of the most popular bands in Mogadishu. The challenge of locating a complete long-player from this era is evidenced by the fidelity of this recording. However, the complex, soulful music penetrates the hiss. In a country that has been disrupted by civil war, heated clan divisions and security concerns, music and the arts has suffered from stagnation in recent years. Incidentally, more than ten years after Volume 5 (1987) was recorded at Radio Mogadishu, the state-run broadcaster was the only station in Somalia to resist the ban on music briefly enacted by Al-Shabab. Dur-Dur Band is a powerful and illustrative lens through which to appreciate the incredible sounds in Somalia before the country's stability took a turn."

Originally released in 1963, Trouble... finds the bohemian cowboy sketching out a vivid picture of a backwater place named Trouble, where trouble with a small 't' is never far away. 'Trouble is little and it's lonesome,' he says, on the title track, 'you won't find it on any map, but you can take three steps in any direction and you're there.' Lee says plenty on the album. The first voice you hear is Hazlewood's spoken-word narration. "Copy Cat," the lead track from this latest installment, features a near-whispered vocal by Kelis over a sensual and minimal fusion of R&B and house, driven by an anxious and bounding groove that ensures the track will remain firmly lodged within the brain upon listening. Elsewhere, Skream takes much the same attitude he took with his recent Skreamizm tour -- a means of exploring broader avenues while still remaining connected to the essence of his sound. Ellen Allien's new work LISm is already being referred to as a milestone in the label's history: rarely has an LP from the circle of BPC artists deviated so far from the club context as this one. The label boss has radically disposed of all established musical templates and created space for 45 minutes of sonic experiments that lie well beyond any functional paradigm -- a highly emotional soundtrack for one's "inner cinema," but also a creative process with a considerable fun factor. The starting point for LISm came in 2010. Ellen was approached by two choreographers and dancers to compose music for their dance performance "Drama per Musica." Under the direction of Alexandre Roccoli and Sevérine Rième, the performance took place on March 7th, 2011 as part of the Spectacles Vivants Festival at the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Drawing from the genre-spanning structure of her DJ sets, Ellen invites the listener to experience the piece as a musical journey with constantly-shifting scenes and impressions. After the successful performance, Ellen initially leaves the music resting on her hard drive before deciding, in early 2012, to revive and rework the stage music for her next album. With this in mind, she invited her label-mate of many years, Thomas Muller, and the Berlin-based DJ and producerBruno Pronsato aka Steven Ford, to her studio in Berlin. As could be expected from this constellation, LISm offers up a considerable breadth and openness of style: rhythmic slivers and fragments are arranged like pieces of a jigsaw until they eventually form a recognizable whole and take shape in the mind of the listener. Instead of focusing on beats and melodies, Ellen works over song phrases with parameters such as volume and tonal density. Swing loops, piano motifs and vocal fragments recited like mantras are just a few of the associative elements that pass before the inner eye, until they too are finally merged into the rhythmic flow of a timelessly-serene, perfectly danceable down-tempo electronica track. At this point the musical elements, connected by an overarching melody, paint a coherent and memorable picture -- a very spiritual picture, as Ellen stresses, which in turn offers a profound insight into one's own emotional world. LISm, originally created in the context of the performing arts, thus generates its own images and associations with their own content in its second phase of conception. The extremely unique and challenging nature of this work also opens the door to intriguing conjecture about BPC's stylistic orientation as the label moves into the future.

And thus, the pressure increases. "Modifier" presents itself with tight, snaking drum patterns and tense, late '90s kinetic warehouse energy. Opening a path into an alternate, yet not-too distant dimension then, "Incubation (Ritual)" takes form; its haunting and graceful waves of synths continue the sci-fi theme, while the tough modulating bass undercurrent reminds us of Function's big-room techno appeal. The final moments of "Incubation (Ritual)" glide effortlessly into the album version of "Inter," where ethereal melodies and snippets of spoken word surround a classic IDM-deep-house core. "Voiceprint" returns as a (Reprise) version, in what could become the crossover club track of the year. Coming on like a classic R&S or Soma release circa '95, the undulating synths are now caught in a rapturous groove, urged on by a perfect 909 drum pattern. "Psychic Warfare" brings the voyage to a close, its overlapping, ebbing metallic acid tones inducing equal measures of tension and elation. In the CD version of the album, "Gradient I" concludes the voyage. Earthy, modulating bass and 808 patterns merge as a cyclic, audio resolution occurs. In the final mixing stages of the album, Function brought the material to cult engineer and producer Tobias Freund (NSI). Incubation is a bold and powerful album from one of modern techno's key players. Inclined to hold back, rather than release too much, Function has let his sound develop and mature, fusing analog synths and drums with modern production techniques to create something unique and timeless.

GAMBLE, LEE: Diversions 1994-1996 LP (PAN 033LP)
Limited 2013 repress. The 30-minute Diversions 1994-1996 EP is made up entirely from samples from the collection of Lee Gamble's jungle cassette mix-tapes. The audio has been subjected to analog and digital deformations, while trying to extract, expand upon, and convey particular qualities emblematic of the original music. The effect is that of a musical body scan, all that is solid melts into air. Sounds are unearthed, dissected on the operating table, melted and unlocked , evoking sonics not unlike the heavy dub processes of Jah Shaka andScion in an INA GRM frame of mind or bearing a similar methodological approach with what Mark Leckey explored in his piece "Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore." It can be heard as a "memory" of a period of music and for some could work as a "cued recall," which is a form of memory retrieval. Lee Gamble started out as a teenager DJing on pirate radio and on the emerging jungle scene; however, his own approach to music has taken a more experimental direction. Exploring the outer realms of abstraction through digital synthesis/resynthesis, Lee has described his current compositional process as "the configuration of material (ex nihilo) via various digital synthesis methods, prompts further disfigurations and reconfigurations. What you then have left is often the detritus or debris of an idea. Phantasms of both previous and current musical, pseudo-scientific and sculptural influences are manifest as new material abstractions, created from the digital blank canvas. This abstraction allows several interests to appear in the works simultaneously." He is also a founding member of the UK-based CYRK collective and has curated/co-curated several CYRK events. He has also produced and curated three radio series for London-based radio station Resonance 104.4 FM and he continues to DJ. Lee has released his computer compositions on the Entr'acte label and has collaborated with composer John Wall and artists Yutaka Makino and Bryan Lewis Saunders. Diversions 1994-1996 is the beginning of a longer-term collaboration with Pan. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Pressed on 140 gram white vinyl housed in a silk screened PVC sleeve with artwork by Kathryn Politis & Bill Kouligas.

Transformación is the first in a long series of collaborations between Madrid's artist DJ F and AHD Records.

Highly influenced by the 90's sounds of detroit like Drexciya, or Atkins DJ F comes up with this beautiful piece of art. Based on somehow "lo-fi" and edgy drums, F develops three outstanding tracks. Transformacion is a Slow Mo' techno track which constantly evolutes in new sounds and forms that evokes us to beautiful passages. Full of layers and melodies, the track soon transforms itself into a mutating animal who shows us how beautiful and raw techno could be. Preludio "prelude" in english is just that, a piece to hear in between this two tracks, a beautiful passage of pads and melodies that once again shows that DJ F has something very special to offer True Love goes to a more straight forward form of techno, or at least that's what it looks like at the beginning. In the late ‘80s, London based musician Julian Jonah suffered of extrasensory perception, as he produced a series of titles that left an unforgettable impression in the growing early-house and acid landscape of the time. Not simply an answer to the first wave of house productions that were flowing out of Chicago at the time, Julian Jonah, along with A Guy Called Gerald and Baby Ford, was part of a movement of UK producers that created the soundtrack to the foundation of the first underground house clubs and warehouse parties in East London and Manchester. In 1988, Julian Jonah produced “Jealousy & Lies” during the last couple hours of studio rental still available that day. When the title came out on Cooltempo that same year, it created such hot and explosive wave, that producer Billie Ray Martin used it as an inspiration for “Talking With Myself" by Electribe 101, the group recently forme d around German singer. Two years later, 1990, Julian offered to Billie to collaborate on a new title. The result was named “It’s A Jungle Out There” and so fantastic that the Def Club was asked to take part – none other than Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Eric Kupper and John Poppo.

Little do people know that Coober Pedy is an opal rich town buried deep within the red and arid outback of South Australia. Lewie Day (aka Tornado Wallace) and Tom Moore may be from Melbourne, but the duo make up the Coober Pedy University Band, coining the term "Krautback" to describe this Moon Plain EP. Drawing upon italo synths and mid-tempo Balearica as inspiration, the first release comes in 10" form via Soft Rocks' Kinfolk label. The reverb washed Australian crooner Chet Faker appears on the title track "Moon Plain" alongside heavy struck piano chords, while "Sentenced Beyond The Seas" is a flow of groggy atmospheres and downtempo beats. "Oblong" is the the EPs stand out italo track with short bass arpeggios a highlight, while Soft Rocks "Acperience" mix of "Moon Plain" takes on an acidic and space western theme.

The Jack Fell Down duo made a considerable splash last year with releases on Southern Fried and Hometaping Is Killing Music and now they resurface in style with the Another Way EP. The second offering from new Sccucci Manucci offshoot, Sccucci's Mistress, this 10" operation is a good home for the Jack Fell Down sound. Lead track "Road To Nowhere" displays a pensive melodic restraint that many of the new crop of house producers seem to overlook in their excitement to get productions from Ableton to Soundcloud. If the A Side sounds like Jack Fell Down holding back, then "Brothers & Sisters" could potentially have them sectioned, such is the crazed madness of the screaming vocals that intermittently punctuate the 90s rave stabs. Great fun.

After two Searle ep’s, Franco Cangelli releases Mowar 14 under his own name. The Lost Conversation ep is well balanced 4-tracker with plenty of warehouse energy and emotional content. First up is Question Authority, a stripped down, somewhat dark techno affair for throbbing dancefloors where people lose their minds over infectious rhythms and punishing stabs. Next comes Paul Mac’s remix of Lost Conversation, which pretty much continues in the same dark wa rehouse vein.
